Uniforms for chefs, or Chef whites as they are more commonly termed, create a professional ambiance when it comes to the kitchen. Modern day men’s and women’s chef uniforms exist because of one man, French Chef Marie-Antoine Carême, who created the chef uniform in 1822. Although it was created during this time, it wasn’t until 1878 that this uniform came into style, and it was standardized later by Auguste Escoffier.

Chef whites were originally created in this iconic white color because it was thought that professional chefs should be able to work without staining or dirtying their uniform, and even when it did get dirty, the stain was quickly noticeable against the white background and the chef could change it immediately. White color is also a reflective color and helps absorb heat making it easier and more comfortable for a Chef to work in a hot kitchen, and it is also easier to clean since white can be bleached unlike other colors.

Men’s and women’s chef uniforms have come a long way since those initial days, and are now available in a wide range of fashionable styles and designs, as well as colors, fabrics and types. They create harmony within the kitchen team, and give the establishment a professional look, and the staff pride in their work.

What is included in a full Chef uniform?

  • The Chef Hat – Also known as the Toque.
  • The Chef Coat or Jacket.
  • The Chef Pants.

Additional items that are included for the ideal Chef uniform are the Apron which gives added protection to the wearer and proper Chef shoes which provide protection for the feet.

The entire Chef’s uniform is worn to protect the wearer from the hazards of the kitchen, and creates an aura of cleanliness, hygiene and professionalism. It creates a great impression in the minds of customers as well.
