Facebook’s latest AI doesn’t only detect deepfake content but also helps find the person who created it.

Deepfakes have been making rounds on the Internet for a long time now. Many people use it with bad intent. Though mostly they’re used for amusing results, deepfakes can be so dangerous that the FBI recently issued a warning stating that foreign powers can use deepfakes as a weapon to defame us.

The most common misuses of deepfakes include fake pictures and fake adult videos. On many adult websites, you can even find dedicated sections for deepfake content. Its popularity is constantly on the rise. Considering its harmful implications, it was necessary to bring a technology that could take it down.

The fight against deepfake didn’t start in 2021. Google launched a huge database of deepfake videos a few years ago to start research in this field.

Thanks to Facebook for stepping up with its latest AI technology to fight deepfake content. Facebook collaborated with Michigan State University to develop this system. The best thing about this system is that it doesn’t only detect deepfake content but also tells you its origin.

Facebook isn’t the only tech giant fighting against malicious deepfakes, Microsoft is also bringing such manipulated media created with bad intent under its radar. Microsoft developed its own Video Authenticator tool to trace deepfake content. This tool from Microsoft also uses artificial intelligence to work.

Facebook has already started removing the manipulated content from its social media platform. Soon, we can expect other social media platforms also to join this fight against misleading media. It’s for sure now that in the near-visible future, this threat will be gone.

What is the ultimate goal of Deepfake technology?

Before going straight to the ultimate goal, let’s learn how this technology works. Firstly, Facebook’s AI-based system detects content manipulated with bad intent on its platform. Once detected, it uses reverse engineering to generate a model of how the content was produced. Then, it matches this model with the generative models in its library. Once it finds a match, it looks for the software that uses that generative model for developing deepfake.

To trace the software using which the culprit generated the content and finding that culprit is the ultimate goal of Facebook’s AI-based deepfake technology. In a way, forensic work is the inspiration of this technology. Just like how forensic experts find a camera by analyzing the specific image patterns, Facebook is finding the deepfake generating software in that way as well.

First testing of the Deepfake tracing AI tool

When Tal Hassner at Facebook first tested the Deepfake tracing AI tool, he wasn’t able to believe that it worked. It was a big breakthrough moment for him and his colleagues. They tested it on 100,000 images equally produced using 100 unique generative models. Hassner didn’t share the exact accuracy, but he did say that they’re way better than random.

It isn’t clear as of yet that how Facebook will use its latest AI tool. But it is clear that if you generate deepfake content, Facebook can find you.

Conclusion

Though a perfectly accurate tool doesn’t exist that can trace every deepfake content generator, Facebook’s AI tool is a big breakthrough. It can help in reducing or completely removing the malicious and harmful media from the Internet. We hope Facebook finds the culprits who have been affecting people’s lives negatively by creating their deepfake images. This way, the Internet will become a better place to browse and enjoy genuine content.
