Ten years ago, the cinema world was all about big things, from big franchises to big screens and big budgets for movies. The last years revived the luxury cinema experience, so now when you buy a ticket to a film you receive spa-similar services.

The screen was all about the rise of comic book inspired movies. If in the past the average superhero movie had three movies (when popular), the latest series included cross-overs, and more than 3 sequels. At the other end of the budget scale, indie movie producers used technology and talent to create masterpieces.

If some think the last decade changed the Hollywood scene forever, what it’s about to come will shake it.

A new type of hero gains success

The last decade was about leading male characters, but lately, audiences have demanded more storylines focused on diversity. People want to see characters with diverse stories and better LGBTQ representation. Since 2010, Hollywood made some progress, and delivered movies like Wonder Woman, Moonlight, Get Out, and Lady Bird that show film producers are ready to create something different

This trend will continue in 2020 because new stories see the screen with the help of Xavier Dolan, Greta Gerwig, Ava Duvernay, and Jordan Peele. It’s expected these names to inspire the new generations of actors, writers, and directors to include unique characters in their movies.

2020 will bring something different, stories that will speak to all people, including marginalised groups who didn’t found story lines to relate to, until now. The cinematic world will grow and bring more adventures, a vast public will enjoy. The great part about movies is that they inspire and evoke emotions in people and by increasing representation in movies, producers ensure no one leaves the cinema feeling unfulfilled.

More musicals

Musicals have seen a resurgence lately, making bucks at the box office and captivating audiences. The trend will definitely continue in 2020 because Hollywood announced some big names In the Heights, Crazy Rich Asians and Everybody’s Talking about Jamie. Musicals even include the new type of hero the cinematic industry promotes, the teen drag queen.

Steven Spielberg announced his first musical with a retelling of the famous Romeo and Juliet story. Only that he’ll take the storyline to West Side New York and create a musical around rival gangs on the street and forbidden love.

And for the ones who loved Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, Hollywood brings on the screen Respect, a movie presenting Jennifer Hudson channelling the queen of soul Aretha Franklin.

Resurrected characters get sequels

Hollywood knows how to create brands and keep them alive, so they have no issue to recognise a growing one. Tom Cruise not only that works on two new Mission Impossible movies, but also tries to resurrect Top Gun: Maverick.

Keanu Reeves doesn’t bring only his famous John Wick character to screen, he also returns to a public’s favourite series Bill and Ted Face the Music.

Will Smith reteamed with Martin Lawrence for Bad Boys, the third movie from the iconic cop movie franchise everyone loves. Do you still remember the song? So do we? (Bad boys, bad boys/ Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do/ When they come for you)

Sony’s Marvel Universe enters a new stage

Now that Sony and Disney buried the drama between them, and Spiderman continues its adventures with the MCU, the studios are also turning their attention to the extended Spider-Verse. The franchise includes some villainous spin-offs that will see the screen soon. Even if Venom got some savage reviews, it was a success for the MCU and they plan to bring Tom Hardy’s character on the screen again. They already work on a sequel of the film, but before launching it, the cinematic universe will bring another villain-character into the light. Morbius, starring Jared Leto (the Joker everyone made jokes about) as the titular living vampire will present another antihero to accompany Venom in the universe. The MCU didn’t release a trailer or an official image for the movie, even if they intend to launch it on 31 July.

Indie movies are still a hot trend

Alongside the big-name blockbusters that will see the screen this year, there will also be some independent films people cannot wait to watch. The ones who loved The Bed, the short movie Fabio Guglielmelli written, directed and shot are definitely interested in Indie movies, more than in Marvel comic books inspired storylines, so the cinematic world makes sure they have plenty movies to watch. Guglielmelli pays great attention to details and is brilliantly depicting the direction Indie movies will follow in 2020.

In 2020, independent movies storylines vary from thrillers that chronicle a day in the life of normal people to how grieving and loss affect people, and political thrillers. Anne Hathaway will play the character of a veteran DC journalist named Elena McMahon in a movie called Mudbound.  The story behind the movie shares is more than interesting because it shows how someone’s life can change overnight.

It’s a big year for female characters

2020 is a big year for female superheroes because DC and Marvel have finally decided to bring them to light. Margot Robbie’s Harley Queen returns on the screen in 2020 with the movie Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn that brings front light women in the starring roles. Everyone hopes this movie is better than the Suicide Squad that was a major failure for the studio.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow also gets her own movie, away from her famous superheroes group. For this movie, the Black Widow teams with other Russian-themed heroes to help the viewers get a better understanding of her past.

Wonder Woman also comes back to the screen in a movie called Wonder Woman 1984. The film takes place before Batman V Superman, so it’s kind of similar to Black Widow. Female heroes have a big time in 2020 because each of them has the chance to share their amazing stories.

It looks like film storylines are unique in 2020, so the public isn’t short of things to watch in the following months.
