Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or postmenopausal hormonetherapy or menopausal hormone therapy, is a form of hormone therapyused to treat physical symptoms associated with the female menopause, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Common treatments includeestrogen and progesterone, which are commonly prescribed byphysicians. When these two hormones fail to provide a woman withenough estrogen and/or progesterone, she may seek alternativetreatment, such as hormone replacement therapy. HRT has beeneffective in helping women suffering from menopausal symptoms andreduces many of these symptoms.

HormoneReplacement Therapy can be used as a preventative measure toward off symptoms associated with the menopause such as night sweatsand vaginal dryness. However, this form of treatment should not beused as a way to make the symptoms go away. Hormone replacementtherapy can actually increase the risks of developing osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Apartfrom this, HRT can increase the risk of developing certain cancersthat are associated with aging, such as breast cancer and coloncancer. Some evidence suggests that women who use HRT to battle theirmenopause symptoms may be at higher risk of developing breast cancerlater in life.

Inaddition to these diseases, Hormone Replacement Therapy can alsoincrease a woman's risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Womenwho wish to use HRT to help them deal with symptoms of the menopausemay need hormone replacement therapy according to age. Women whoreach the age of 45 years or older may need HRT to help them copewith menopause and osteoporosis. Women who are within this age groupmay experience an imbalance in their hormones. This imbalance iscaused by a drop in estrogen levels. Those with enough estrogen cancontrol the symptoms of the menopause and osteoporosis on their own. However, those without enough estrogen in their bodies, may needhormone replacement therapy.
