A laser cutting machine works by focusing a laser beam of light on a piece of material. The laser light is so high-powered, that when it is focused, it is cut enough to raise the temperature of the material or vaporize the material, focusing the beam over a small area. Often, an assist gas is used to help push the molten material out of the cutting area. This is especially true for materials such as plywood or for cutting thick sheets of metal.
To cut shapes, the laser head is moved, allowing a line to be cut instead of a small pinhole, using some form of gantry to position the beam on the new material. Types of motion systems include rack and pinion, ball screw, and linear motor. Linear motors are the most expensive, but also the fastest and most accurate. Racks and pinions provide nearly the same speed and accuracy, but for a lower price. Some small radical lasers may use timing belts and stepper motors to move their laser heads. In all cases, a system works, and the encoder feedback machine greatly improves cutting accuracy, as does a rigid frame, isolated from vibration.

Industrial lasers are typically 1–8kW, while hobby lasers are typically between .25W to 40W, so industrial lasers are 100–1000 times stronger than hobbyist lasers.
