It's a well-known fact that bikes are easy to steal. Whether you keep your bike in the garage or on the street, it is one of those things that thieves will go after. The following tips might help deter someone from stealing your bike by making them think twice about their decision.
1) Bicycle tyres in Sri Lanka are one of the things that robbers seem to want to take. Always lock up both wheels and frame securely with a heavy chain and padlock as this takes time for thieves to break through.
2) Use an old bicycle tyre tube around the rim of each wheel to prevent pry bars from being inserted into the spokes and then used as levers against either side of the tyre.
3) Store your motorcycle in a locked shed, building or basement instead of out in plain sight in the driveway
Due to the high motorcycle tyre prices in Sri Lanka, as well as other accessories, robbers may find it profitable to steal and sell these items.
A thief would need to spend a considerable amount of time and effort in order to steal your bicycle or motorcycle, so you should be able to rest assured that they will not get away with it easily. They could attempt unscrewing screws from tyres by inserting an object like a screwdriver blade down through one hole at a time but this task can take hours before tyres are removed completely because there are usually five or six holes per wheel-tyre combination.
The very first step is to make sure the area around your bicycle or motorcycle is free of clutter and obstructions. Nothing can be in front of it, on top of it, behind it, under it etc. That way thieves don't have any hiding places for themselves if you're looking out the window at night while preparing for bed as an example. You should also consider using u-locks whenever possible because they will provide more security than cable locks alone due to their size which would take a thief much longer to cut through with wire snips but there are other ways that people may nevertheless get access without destroying anything.
It is often advised to get all of your motorcycle or bike insured against robbery to ensure peace of mind.
