Disable/Enable Read Receipts
As the issue arriving on your device is related to the read receipts feature, the very first fix one could think of is disabling and then enabling the same for your iMessage. The steps are as follows:
- Launch the Settings app.
- Locate the ‘Messages’ tab and click on the same.
- Turn off the slider for the ‘Send Read Receipts’ option.
- Now, re-enable the feature by turning the slider on.
Check if the issue is resolved. If you use the read receipt feature for some specific contacts, you’ll have to do it individually.
Remove the Message Thread
Since many people are facing the issue with specific contacts only, try deleting the message thread. Sure, you’ll have to restart the conversation, and you’ll lose all the messages, but it’s likely to fix the error. Go to iMessage and press & hold on the contact name you want to delete the message thread. A pop-up menu will open from where you’ll need to select the ‘Delete’ option.

Update Your Device

Restart Your Apple Device
The last method to try is restarting your iPhone or iPad. If you’re using one of the new models, press and hold the power and volume up button simultaneously. Once the shutdown menu appears, slide on ‘Slide to power off’ to shut down. If you’re using an older Apple device with a physical home button, press and hold the power button only until the shutdown menu appears.
