In order to use the Apple Pencil, you must pair it with your iPad Pro first. Both generations 1st and 2nd pair differently and here’s how you can do it:

Pair 1st generation Apple Pencil

  • Unlock your iPad, and uncap your Apple Pencil.
  • Plug your Apple Pencil with iPad.
  • Turn on Bluetooth, and Pair Apple Pencil.

Pair 2nd generation Apple Pencil

  • Unlock the iPad.
  • Put the Apple Pencil on the wide side of iPad Pro over the magnetic strip.
  • Press the Pair option on the pop-up display.

Once the Apple Pencil is paired with iPad Pro or iPad, you can use it as you want.

How to Check Battery Level on Apple Pencil

On Apple Pencil, there’s no physical indicator given, but you can still view its battery level on your connected iPad.

Check Battery Level of 1st Generation Apple Pencil

  • Slide down from the top of the screen to view Notification Center.
  • Now swipe right to view the Widget display.
  • Check the Battery section.
  • If the Batteries section is not appearing in the Widget tab, then press Edit and add the Batteries to the Widget tab.

Check Battery Level of 2nd Generation Apple Pencil

Checking the battery level of the 2nd generation Apple Pencil is a pretty easy process. You can either follow the same procedure mentioned above or place the Apple Pencil on the magnetic strip on iPad Pro. Placing and removing from the magnetic strip area will show a pop-up window that will show the current battery level of Apple Pencil.
