Accident – the word evokes many thoughts and feelings but more often than ever it is explained as an unfortunate event, resulting in injuries of numerous kinds. One of the most common physical injuries that happen as a consequence of an accident is head injuries. According to Medline Plus, a head injury is any kind of physical trauma that may negatively affect a victim’s head and brain. One of the major types of head injuries is Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI). Caused by a trip, blow, fall, or a vehicle accident, it also results in the maximum number of deaths and permanent disabilities in almost every part of the world.

If we specifically look at India’s situation with regard to TBI, we will find that more than 100, 000 people succumb to severe head injuries per year. These statistics definitely show a grim picture. Head injuries require treatment on an immediate basis. However, the emergency medical facilities in India are not capable of handling the severity of head injuries happening in such mammoth numbers.

Indian Head Injury Foundation

To combat the situation with the help of proper head injury management strategy, medical or otherwise, the Indian Head Injury Foundation came into existence in the year 2007. It was established by Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur after he had gone through the extreme phases of distress upon his only son’s head injury in 2005 during a polo match.

The Indian Head Injury Foundation functions as an integrated system that is focussed on the prevention, diagnosis as well as the treatment of TBI. It is also known for providing neuro-rehabilitation to the people who have been the victims of unfortunate incidents that resulted in serious head injuries.

During his son’s treatment in the US, Maharaja Gaj Singh had been a witness to numerous infrastructure issues that India had with regards to the safe medical intervention for head injuries. This was done to eliminate the elements that had been puncturing the head injury management.

After the establishment of Indian Head Injury Foundation, Yuvraj Shivraj Singh Trauma Rehabilitation Centre in Jodhpur was built to provide intensive medical care to TBI victims since the pre-medical stage. From providing critical trauma ambulance services to telemedicine facilities, it also supports the various victim groups and community health assistant programmes besides general awareness and prevention programmes.

The IHIF is spearheading the head injury management and care in India with the support of prominent personalities like Mrs. Vineeta Rai, Former Secretary, Administrative Reforms, Government of India and Mr. Suhel Seth, Managing Partner, Counselage India Pvt. Ltd as its advisory board members and Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Commodore Ranbir Talwar as the management.

With a vision to make India sturdier as far as head injury management is concerned and create awareness about the same, Indian Head Injury Foundation is going extra miles to safeguard the nation and its residents from the peril of accidents and the hardships that emerge consequently.
