Basic Information On Stromectol
Stromectol is an anthelmintic used in the treatment of parasitic infections. It is an oral, semi-synthetic antiparasitic medicine that works by paralyzing and killing sensitive parasites and thus curing parasitic infections. It treats intestinal Strongyloidiasis caused by the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis. This bacterial infection affects the glands, eyes, and skin. It can cause thickening of the skin and loss of elasticity. It can also enlarge the glands in the neck, armpits, and groin. The drug Stromectol is produced by the fermentation of the bacteria known as Streptomyces avermitilis. It is also used in the treatment of Onchocerciasis caused by the nematode parasite Onchocerca volvulus. Monitoring improvement, through regular stool tests is a part of the Stromectol treatment
Precautions / Side Effects Of Stromectol
Stromectol contains Ivermectin (Iverheal 6) which may cause side effects like joint pain, fainting or dizziness on standing up, swelling in eyes, swelling and tenderness of lymph nodes, and palpitations. Alcohol can further aggravate these side effects. You should report these symptoms to your doctor. Stool examinations can be performed to check for side effects. While administering brand or generic Stromectol for treating onchocerciasis, it should be ensured that the patient does not suffer from other nematode infections. Infections like Loa Loa can cause severe encephalitis and even death.
Ivermectin (Iverheal 12) belongs to pregnancy category C and must not be taken by pregnant and breastfeeding women. Brand or generic Stromectol is secreted in breast milk. You should tell your doctor if you have asthma or an impaired immune system (eg: HIV infection). Repeated treatment may be required for patients with HIV infection. You should inform your doctor if you are taking other prescription or nonprescription medication, herbal medicines, over-the-counter medicine, or any dietary supplements.
Stromectol Dosage
For the treatment of Strongyloidiasis, Stromectol is recommended as a single oral dosage of 200 mcg of Ivermectin (Iverheal) per kg of body weight. You should take the tablet by mouth on an empty stomach. It should be taken with water. You should undergo regular stool examination to detect the elimination of infection. For the treatment of Onchocerciasis, a single oral dose of 150 mcg of Ivermectin (Iverheal) per kg of body weight is recommended. Normally, an interval of 12 months is observed before re-treatment, however, for individual patients, re-treatment can also be started after a short interval of 3 months.
