Several memorable anime made their debut last year. While most of them were just as good as they were advertised but a few surpassed all expectations. Shows like Re: Zero to WEBTOON’S Tower of God adaptation were well received by the anime fandom. However, no series garnered as much buzz as Jujutsu Kaisen. The supernatural horror series became the most popular anime in 2020 surpassing some major titles. Although Jujutsu Kaisen’s success was anticipated by many no one could have predicted that it will surpass so many great shows.

According to Crunchyroll, Jujutsu Kaisen was the most popular anime in 71 countries and territories. Even Boruto and My Hero Academia combined did not become anywhere near Jujutsu Kaisen’s popularity. While the former was famous in 32 countries the latter was a fan favorite in 23 countries. Although these popularity figures do not include TV ratings for Japan. Since these shows were Crunchyroll exclusive, these figures paint a definitive picture of the series’ popularity around the globe. Jujutsu Kaisen was able to beat all its competition last year and surprised many with its success.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Popularity

Based on a well-known manga by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime adaptation was revealed last year in October. It is halfway through its inaugural season as of now but it has already surpassed some major titles leaving its critics surprised. Shows like Boruto and My Hero Academia which has been around for a few years and consistently ranked as one of the top anime. But they were nowhere as good as Jujutsu Kaisen. The manga was still popular for the last few years. With the weight of MAPPA as its animation studio, Jujutsu Kaisen took the anime world by storm and soon become one of the best shows. Jujutsu Kaisen now has a great opportunity to establish itself as one of the Shonen greats.

The series follows Yuuji Itadori, who swallowed the cursed rotting fingers of the infamous Sukuna and became the vessel for him. His mistakes ultimately mark Itadori’s death and he found himself enveloped into a world of Jujutsu Sorcerers and sinister Curses. Along with Nobara Kugisaki, Megumi Fushiguro, and Satoru Gojou, he joins Jujutsu Tech. Despite being jinxed by his newfound Cursed Energy, Itadori is determined to help people with his new powers, regardless of his fate.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Future

There has been a growing demand for horror anime in the last few years that has led to the mass popularity of shows like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Chainsaw Man. The monster-slaying subgenre for some time has also been a staple in Weekly Shonen Jump. These action-horror adventures feature horror and dark elements. Itadori has to face creepy creatures who can rip out the protagonist’s heart with little effort. He has to be valiant all the time without ever failing to help those who are in need. It is therefore not surprising that the series is quite engaging and makes the viewers think deeply about numerous possibilities.

Since Jujutsu Kaisen is only halfway through its inaugural season, we can expect the series to become more popular in the coming months. The fans would expect that the show will be just as good as it has been in the last few months and they get to see more exciting action. The show has already been impressive with its widespread global viewership. As the series approaches its finale, its popularity will soon peak and we can expect it to break many records. It won’t be surprising if it surpasses all Shonen anime of the last decade.
