Not much is known about the Boo ghosts that appear in the Mario games. This is not very surprising because they are ghosts. However, with Halloween around the corner, various fan theories are beginning to sprout regarding Boo and why these ghosts tend to cover their faces when they are confronted. Unlike your typical ghost, Boo is a cute little loveable blob that appears in the Mario games franchise. The Boo ghost trails closely behind the player and could even kill the player if they don’t face Boo. However, what’s really intriguing about Boo is that when confronted, the ghost quickly covers his face.

The Little That We Know About Boo

Boo made his very first appearance way back in the year 1990 as a part of Super Mario Bros 3. Though Boo was introduced as Mario’s enemy, he also had a playful presence and hid when he came face to face with Mario. With time, Boo started to represent a group of ghosts rather than a singular character. All the ghosts featured in the games came to be collectively known as the “Boos.” Named after the classic white Boo (also the most common). This group of ghosts included “King Boo,” the leader of all the ghosts who was introduced in the year 2001 in Luigi’s Mansion. He wears a crown fit for a king so you’ll be sure not to miss him. There is also a giant Boo (Boolossus) who is made up of a collection of 15 Boos.

How Fan Theory Explains Boo’s Behaviour

Some may say that the Boos are the deceased residents of the Kingdom. But this is too plain a theory and does nothing to explain why Boo hides when confronted. According to a 2018 theory, Boos are the ghosts of deceased Shy Guys. Shy Guys are somewhat similar in appearance to the Boos. They are small blob-like figures who wear a white mask and are dressed in robes of different colors (usually red). The main link between the two is that they are both shy characters who like to cover their faces. So, Boo could be Shy Guy coming back as a ghost.

Now that we have found a possible explanation for Boo, this Halloween as all things get spooky, you might just catch a glimpse of the shy little Boo! And if Boo is nowhere to be found, it wouldn’t be so surprising considering how much he likes to hide.
