Mel Gibson confirms that director Richard Donner is working on the Lethal Weapon 5.

Lethal Weapon is an American franchise of action-comedy media franchise created by Shane Black. The plot focuses on two detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department, Roger Murtaugh, and Martin Riggs. The franchise consists of four movies released in 1987 and 1998. And later, the franchise released TV series aired from 2016 to 2019.

The team is now working on the fifth installment of the franchise. Actor Gibson and Donald Glover starred in the first two movies. Later, Joe Pesci joined the cast in 1992 for Lethal Weapon 3, and Chris Rock was hired for the fourth installment Lethal Weapon 4. According to a report, Donner, Gibson, and Glover would reunite in the film. The team has not spoken anything about Pesci, Rock, or any other cast member, like Rene Russo.

Fans were expecting that Black would return as the writer of the franchise, but there has been no news regarding that. Now, after a long time, Gibson announced that the film Lethal Weapon 5 is alive. In an interview on Good Morning America with host Michael Strahan, the Fatman actor, Gibson was asked about the current status of the film Lethal Weapon 5. Gibson confirmed that it is in process, and the legendary director Donner is on board with them. However, Gibson did not mention the name of the writer or co-star. The actor’s enthusiasm indeed confirms that the film is happening. His full statement was, “Yeah! No, absolutely. The man behind all these, the man who brought the screenplay on screen, is working on it right now: Richard Donner. He is a legend.”

Gibson’s positive comments and excitement can be depicted as Glover is attached to the film, mostly if Donner works on the movie. Glover’s character, Murtaugh, talked about his retirement 33 years ago, and the actor is now 74. On the other hand, Gibson is 64 years old. Hopefully, the writer would find some way to introduce some younger characters to do the action.

However, many say that according to the franchise’s past failure, the sequel is unnecessary. Many believe that makers should not think about bringing back the characters alive after the third and fourth films’ terrible quality. Plus, with the controversies surrounding Gibson for his misogynistic and racist comments, it is unclear how the general public would react to the film. Although filmmakers can properly recapture the essence of the first two movies, Lethal Weapon 5, it might be a surprise hit.
