  1. Introduction –

Some kinds of filtration comprise carbon, HEPA, potassium per magnate and also its combination. Scientific equipment which is very common to the labs of chemistry and is created in such a fashion which limits an individual’s exposure to hazardous fumes/atmosphere is called a portable fume hood. There are 2 pivotal types of fume hoods which are like filtered re-circulating and vented or ducted fume hood.

There are many different categories of portable fume hoods which are available in the market. You can choose anyone from them. Let’s have a look at some of the portable fume hoods.

PFH-24 Portable Fume Hood-

This is one of the smallest portable fume hoodsIt covers the length of 24”x 18” depth x 18” high. There is no need for it to be piped into the exhaust system. It can vent directly into the labs. There are available HEPA filters, carbon filters and others which helps in the removal of the organic vapors, iodine, and others, etc. It also ensures that all the contaminants pass through the filter media and the filters can be stacked and their gaskets are also seamless.

PFH-30 Portable Fume Hood –

It is the next category of portable fume hood and it covers the 30” length x 18” depth x 18” high. All the models of the portable fume hoods have the same blower in it. The flow rate is completely reduced as the work area is greater than the smaller unit. It can also be vented directly into the laboratories and there is no role of the exhaust system in it as mentioned above. HEPA filters, potassium permanganate filters, and carbon filters are available. It also helps in the removal of harmful gases and chemicals which are exposed and extracted from the experimentation. Gaskets are seamless and the filters are stacked which in turn ensures that the contaminants or particulates pass through the filter media. This is not for radioiodine.

PFH-50 -50 inch Portable Fume Hood –

It is one of the largest portable fume hoods which have a length of 50” x 18” depth and 18” height. There are two blowers which provide a strong airflow and also there is 2 workers' room space. These portable fume hoods can be vent directly into the scientific and experimentation labs and there is no system of the exhaust.

SE-2 Portable Fume Hood for Scale Enclosure –

This is also one kind of portable fume hood which is created especially for the use of scales or measurement. There are filters available in this fume hood which comprises of the following such as Carbon, HEPA, PotassiumPermanganate, and combinations. Up to 100,000 hours, the blowers are rated. VDE, CSA, and UL listed are the variable speed blowers.

Radioiodine Fume Hood –

There are many companies which offer 3 separate standard portable fumehoods category i.e. the iodine hoods. You can build custom designs to your specifications. These hoods have filters that are horizontal and prevent the airflow tunneling more charcoal, a higher airflow of 148 cfm fan-free air. Apart from that, there is also an auto shut off timer, with which there is a baffle that directs airflow to the rear of the hood and a hinged faceplate for extra flow protection. This all is provided in the units which cost less and also it needs less space than the other similar hoods.

Custom Portable and Vented Fume Hoods Available –

Now you should know in-depth as to what is a portable fume hood. Well, it is a kind of scientific equipment which the chemistry lab people use and is created for it to protect the scientists or any person from the harmful exposure to gases and others. There are primarily two types of fume hoods one is the filtered re-circulating and the other is the vented i.e. ducted one. The process of experimentation or the principle is the same one for both types. In this, the air is drawn from the front of the cabinet by the fan and is expelled through ductwork.

It is made safe through the process of filtration and also the feedback which is into the room. The filtration process comprises of carbon, potassium permanganate, and HEPA. For; the removal of organic vapors, formaldehyde, and particulates, the filters are placed into the portable fume hoods. It also ensures that the contaminants/particulates pass through the filter media.

Factors to be Considered While Purchasing a Portable Fume Hood –

Now that you know what a portable fume hood is and what are the different categories, you should also know and consider a few things prior to buying one. They are as follows –

  • Safety features and health feature
  • Product performance
  • Product durability
  • Ease of cleaning and its durability
  • Ergonomic operation and easy to use
  • Price paid value & operating cost which should be low
  • Warranty & service support etc.
