Salman Khan in Race 3

One of the biggest problems with Bollywood these days is that the makers are not willing to take risks. It is formula-based films that are becoming the greatest undoing of Bollywood. Race 3, the latest installment in the popular Race franchise, is essentially a parody of the dozens of Hollywood action films that director Remo D’Souza and writer Shiraz Ahmed would have seen over the years. It is impossible not to think of the ‘James Bond’, ‘Mission: Impossible’, and ‘Fast and Furious’ films while watching Race 3. But, instead of drawing inspiration, Race 3 makes a conscious attempt to mimic them. And that’s precisely where the movie falters.

Consider an action scene early in Race 3 wherein two characters try to infiltrate an enemy bastion. The scene opens in the exact fashion as a similar scene from Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. It is so blatant that one just can’t believe one’s eyes. The rest of the action sequences in the film too come across as parodies of the popular action movie scenes we are accustomed to watching in Hollywood movies such as the scene wherein a bunch of bikers try to assassinate a pivotal character on a highway. What makes matters worse for Race 3 is its ludicrous storyline. While both Race and Race 2 had interesting characters, Race 3 lack even in that department.

My quick thoughts on Race 3

Bollywood producers today think that building movie franchises on the lines of Hollywood is a bankable thing to do but they fail to pay any heed to the planning and efforts that go into making a successful movie franchise. It is not only what looks on the outside but also what goes on in the background. The kind of attention to detail that goes into Hollywood films is staggering. Now, we may say that a franchise like ‘Avengers’ isn’t really producing great cinema. The fact of the matter is that it isn’t. But what it is able to achieve is consistency across all its movies. It is something that Bollywood filmmakers at this point of time seem to have no clue about.

Anil Kapoor in Race 3

Overall, Race3 is marked by bad acting and ridiculous twists. The laughable subplots and vacuous humor make it a somnolent affair that even Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor fail to spice up. Sadly, the supporting cast is just terrible, At 52, Salman should seriously reconsider playing such clichéd characters, especially after having played some very interesting characters in recent films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. Another major weak area as far as Race 3is concerned is its song sequences, most of which look rather unnecessary, in particular the song featuring Bobby Deol and Daisy Shah. To make the matters worse, it comes at exactly the wrong moment. But probably the worst part is how desperate the makers appear to be in setting up the premise for Race 4. One sincerely hopes for Salman Khan's sake that it doesn't happen anytime soon.
