Ten Tips for a Ramadan Checklist

Ramadan is a blessed month for Muslims, and we should look to extract maximum benefits. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and fasting during this month is obligatory. One of the ways to gain the most benefit from Ramadan is by setting up a Ramadan checklist. This provides us preparing for Ramadan with a list of things that we should do during the blessed month.

Taqwa

Allah tells us in Surah al-Baqarah that He prescribed fasting for us as He did for those in the past, so that we may attain piety. This means to get close to Allah and always to be conscious of Him. If we have Taqwa, we fear displeasing Allah and are always aware of His presence and that He is watching us. The way to do this is to engage in maximum acts of worship, both obligatory and optional.

Get Closer to Allah

Allah says that Muslims don’t get close to Him by anything that is more cherished by Him than the mandatory duties. Hence, we should utilize the benefits of fasting to the maximum in this regard. Additionally, we should keep remembering Allah while fasting and also perform good deeds. Moreover, staying away from sinning is a must, and with that, perhaps we can get close to Allah.

Patience for Allah’s Sake

Allah mentions patience around 100 times in the Quran. Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) called Ramadan the month of patience. We must exercise immense patience during this blessed month. This is in the form of suppressing hunger as well as anger. Getting angry is one of the easiest ways of sinning, which we must avoid.

Charity

We must give charity during Ramadan because it is one of the greatest deeds. Ramadan is a month during which we learn to empathize with the needy. Hence, we must also help them as much as possible by providing them food for iftar, suhur, etc. This compassionate act allows us to gain a lot of reward from Allah.

Enjoin Good, Forbid Evil

The Quran mentions enjoining good and forbidding evil as one of the standout traits of Muslims. We must ensure that we focus on this by speaking up if we see someone doing something evil. Doing that in public is not always necessary. We can be tactful depending on the situation, but the end goal remains the same.

Self-Control

The Prophet (PBUH) tells us that a righteous believer is the one who doesn’t harm others, either with his tongue or his hand. He also said that we should speak good or keep silent. Hence, we should use Ramadan as a training period where we do not harm anyone, either verbally or physically.

Fulfill the Rights of Muslims

The Prophet (PBUH) narrated that Muslims have rights over each other. Each Muslim should ensure that he doesn’t obstruct his fellow Muslim’s rights. Among these rights include the greeting of Salam, accepting invites, advising Muslims, responding to sneezes, visiting the sick, and going to their funerals after they pass away. We should seek knowledge about the rights of Muslims and ensure that we don’t obstruct any of them.
