Daphne and the Nay-Laurel Tree

‘Tales from the Land of Serenity’ came into being shortly after the horrific assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta on 16th October 2017. A well-known investigative journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia was blown up by a car bomb, minutes away from her home in Bidnija. The title of these stories derives from words spoken by the Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, a few days after her murder: ‘When the MEPs visit Malta, they will do so with a sense of serenity’…

Some comforting stories from the Land of Serenity…

If you don’t get blown up in a car, have your alleged attempts to ‘make political mileage’ out of the current situation ‘blow up in your face’ then you risk getting crushed by a crane because god knows there aren’t enough of these on this tiny cramped little island jostling over who can be the most corrupt. But if you’re a ‘whore’ then no doubt you deserved it.

Tales from the Land of Serenity Part 2

Here, on this tranquil Mediterranean island where the people eat their pastizzi in peaceful harmony with nature, it’s business as usual. Adrian Hillman, the former managing director of Allied Newspapers, recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the highly controversial ‘American’ University of Malta, is suspected, on the grounds of a leaked report by the FIAU, to be potentially engaged in money laundering activities involving a politician in position of power who shall here remain nameless…because everybody knows his name is Keith Schembri!

Meanwhile, one of the IT ‘experts’ believed to have been appointed to investigate the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a journalist blown up by a car bomb in broad daylight on the 16th of October 2017, has a criminal record.

Amidst this sea of calm, 2 Nexia BT auditors Brian Tonna and Karl Cini have resigned from the Malta Institute of Accountants due to the disciplinary proceedings that were initiated against them after their involvement in the Panama Papers scandal. Their resignations thus put an end to the intrusive disciplinary processes being mounted against them, enabling them to walk blissfully away into the Maltese sunset.

At the same time, Ana Gomes, an MEP from the never-never land of somewhere else, has highlighted the lack of faith in the Maltese authorities, insisting on the need to involve Europol in Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder investigation.

All things considered, such lack of faith must surely be unnecessary rumour, a ripple on the sea of tranquillity in this pleasant land of sheer serenity.

Tales from the Land of Serenity have been made into podcasts, read and produced by Pia Zammit. They are published on manueldelia.com
