Recently, Warner Bros. and HBO Max shared the upcoming 2021 movies list. The scheduled movies include Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, and Dune. However, the forthcoming Matt Reeves’ movie Batman is still out of the HBO Max list and is exclusive to theatres.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created many problems for the movie industry. It forced the movie theaters to shut down the movie theatres for an extended period. Now the studios and producers are slowly trying to adapt to the new normal and exploring different approaches to releasing films. Films like Mulan and Trolls: World Tour released as a video on demand. And both movies did a fantastic collection. On the other hand, despite increasing the coronavirus cases the filmmaker Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. decided to release the big-budget science fiction movie, Tenet in theatres this September. The film performs pretty well overseas but disappointed the producers with low collection in the United States.

The film’s fate taught a lesson to the other franchise, and most of them either delayed their release date or opted for video-on-demand release. Warner Bros. also chooses to release some of its anticipated films on HBO Max, which will be only available for the United States audiences. The WB projects will also encourage the audience to get them paid subscriptions.

However, Reeves’ Batman is not following the path of The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984. The movie’s release date is delayed to 4 March 2022, which was initially scheduled to be released on 1 October 2021. The announcement to release most of the Warner Bros. movie on its streaming platform has received much criticism. Movie fans said it would negatively affect the movie theatres trying to get on their feet after a long lockdown. And releasing the films on the HBO Max on the same day on theatres will cause low revenue collection and degrade the growth of the cinemas in between the crisis. Also, the audience is not very happy with Warner Bros. and called the step very non-thoughtful after releasing the Tenet. Releasing the films will encourage the fans to go to the theatres during this pandemic, which might cause a further increase of coronavirus cases.

After the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, there are some rays of hope at the end of the tunnel. The health ministry shared that it is expecting to get over control by the end of 2021. Hence Warner Bros. has scheduled and committed 2021 to HBO Max, which has struggled to make its audience after its launch in May.

The fears of fans are real that prioritizing streaming platforms will destroy the cinemas, to which the CEO of Warner Bros. Ann Sarnoff said this is just for 2021 and there’s no one more than them who wants movies to be back on the big screen. She added that it is also important to balance this with the reality that most theatres in the United States will be capacity throughout 2021.

Fans and the film industry are hoping that things will slowly come back to normal in 2022. Hence, the studio will not compromise The Batman’s theatrical release with HBO Max’s simultaneous release.
