If you’re a student looking to broaden your horizons and you’re considering another country, let alone another city to study in, then you’ve got a fantastic bunch of options in England. Well known for the quality of its higher education, England has some of the top rated universities in the World. But university isn’t all about institution, so much of university life depends on the city you live in and what you can do!

If you are looking at England as a possible destination to study in, it’s worth taking a look at the cities below as possible options.

London

It’s impossible to think about studying in England without mentioning the capital. With a hugely diverse population, there are thousands of other international students here making up a huge part of the community. In total, London has around 500,000 students, including undergraduates and postgraduates.

There are several top institutions in the capital, with Kings College London, the University of London, University College London, there’s pretty much something for everyone with a wide range of different courses available.

Living in London has its own set of pros and cons, with so much going on there are student nights out around every corner. But at the same time, there’s so much more you can do. Theatre trips, visits round the Thames, London museums the National Portrait Gallery, the list is pretty much endless!

Newcastle

Newcastle is buzzing with student life, from the magnitude of bars and friendly student societies at both of the universities you’ll be sure to find your crowd. With both Newcastle University and Northumbria University in the city, there’s a large student population with around 27,000 attending the two universities.

The nightlife has been made famous by ‘Geordie Shore’ the infamous group of Geordies who do excessive drinking and continually enjoy the thriving nightlife of Newcastle. There are plenty of student nights out, society trips and bar crawls that will no doubt have you loving student life.

Sitting towards the North of the UK, you’ll also be close to the beauty of the Lake district, as well as only being a short train trip from Scotland. So it’s perfect if you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy student life. Newcastle is also lucky to have its own airport, so it’s ideal for those all-important trip homes.

Sheffield

With over 60,000 students hitting Sheffield every year, you’re bound to feel at home in the ‘Steel City’. With both Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield rated in the top 50, you’ll be spoilt for choice and both universities having their own set of subject specialities.

With the Peak District just a short 20-minute trip out of town, you’ve got a great opportunity to get outdoors and away from hustle and bustle of student life. Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in the UK, home to plenty of public parks close by to the city centre, such as the Botanical Gardens and Endcliffe Park.

There’s plenty to do as a student too, with the Crucible hosting the world championship snooker tournaments every year. You also shouldn’t forget that Sheffield is home to two Premier League football teams, so you can enjoy a feast of football.

Bristol

Home to the University of Bristol and 44,000 students, Bristol is famed for its university and as a place to live. Voted as the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times in 2017, there’s plenty to get stuck into as a student in the city.

Famous amongst for students for being one of the best student nights out, Bristol is home to ‘Milk Thistle’ and ‘La Sorella’ which have been voted as two of the best indie bars in the country. If you ever feel as though you need a break away from late nights though, don’t forget that Bristol has an abundance of outdoor green spaces with Brandon Hill, College Green and Leigh Woods all providing the perfect get away, out of the city for a wonderful summer walk.

Coventry

Rated as one of the top five UK student cities in 2018, Coventry is a thriving destination for any student who wants to study internationally. It’s home to both the University of Warwick and Coventry University and the city welcomes around 35,000 undergraduate and postgraduate student every year.

A city which is well known for its culture, having been voted the UK’s city of Culture in 2021, there’s an incredible mix of different experiences and ethnicities in the city. Comedy nights, West End shows and live music gigs going almost every week. That’s on top of all the different student socials that are happen pretty much every night!

Luckily, England is packed out with top University's so you've got plenty of choice when it comes to picking out somewhere to live, above are just a few different choices and should hopefully give you an insight into some possible studying locations.
