6 years – Perodua Axia has been out for 6 years. It may seem hard to believe now, but this tiny A-class hatchback has been cruising the streets of Malaysia since 2014. It's been so many years that we think maybe next year we'll have an upgrade.
If you trace the history of the Axia, you will find that it originated from the Daihatsu A-Concept in 2011, A Concept car that was shown at the 2011 International Auto Show Indonesia (IIMS). A mass-production version of the concept car, called the Daihatsu Ayla, was shown at IIMS 2012 and officially launched in Indonesia in September 2013. I
The Axia came a bit later, making its first appearance at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) in 2013, where it showed off its interior in the form of GMA Space Concept.n 2019, the Perodua Axia Style was released with the Crossover Style.
Either way, it's time for a new generation. Why?
First of all, in terms of platform, Daihatsu Ayla/Toyota Aya and later Perodua Axia used Daihatsu's global A-class platform. In 2019, the Japanese automaker announced that all future small cars launched in Japan and other emerging markets would be based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA).
Last year, DNGA made its debut on the Japanese-limited Tanto, followed by the Daihatsu Rocky/Toyota Raize, which we know is the unreleased Perodua D55L. Don't forget, the next generation of Perodua Alza will also be built on DNGA, and we have reason to believe that the next generation of Toyota Vios will use the same platform.
Daihatsu would have planned to introduce DNGA models in China as regulations become stricter, and plans have already begun (a Rocky/Razie was recently spotted in Indonesia). So it was only a matter of time before we had the next generation Axia concept car, most likely to be unveiled at IIMS next year.
