The Night Last Proms but proms aren’t just big names on stage. Without orchestra players, technicians, housekeepers, and other teams working tirelessly behind and in front of the stage. The event wouldn’t even have started. As a group, the prom crowd – especially the ball-goers in the arena. Was as much of an occasion as the musicians who came to watch them.

We talk to people who, though rarely mentioned, really make the BBC Ball tick. As prom veterans, they are all part of the furniture of the Albert Hall, reunited every July. Give for another two months, and then go their separate way in September. With their diaries firmly marked for the following year…

Conductors are very different. Gant Wonder was so nervous that he could leave at any time. But at the concert, he was completely in his own world and took us all with him. Bernard A. Heink always has a lot of respect for us, on our side, he is the leader of the team. They all get results in different ways.

We usually only have two or three days of rehearsals for the ball. The British Orchestra is known for allowing reading and learning to see very quickly.

The dance was different from when I joined, and the orchestra is now in a stronger position. To play, so I feel very lucky to be here. The trajectory to become a world-class orchestra is steep and we are proud to have Zachary Alamo. The hall has also changed: it’s smarter and the backstage space has improved significantly. It’s a good place to play now.

Being co-principal cello, I usually can’t do “Tom Bowling” solo in English sea song last night. One year, our director, Susan Monks, cut her finger, so I got a call. When I was done, she was in the background drinking champagne.
