Prophet Nuh (AS) was the first prophet Allah sent after Adam (AS). He is one of the only 25 prophets Allah has mentioned by name in the Quran. Nuh (AS) preached to his people for around 950 years and tried to convince them to give up their evil ways and worship Allah, which is the purpose Allah created us for. However, despite repeated warnings and telling them of Allah’s impending punishment, the people failed to listen. Hence, Nuh (AS) prayed to Allah to destroy the disbelievers since they were insistent upon spreading corruption.

As a result, Allah told Nuh (AS) to build an ark, and Nuh (AS) and the believers dutifully started doing so. The disbelievers were flabbergasted, but Nuh (AS) and his people kept at it. When the ark was ready, Allah commanded them to go onboard. He also told them to take one pair of each animal onboard. Then, Allah allowed the clouds to open up and pour down on the land. The resulting flood destroyed all life that existed except for the people on the ark. Then, Allah allowed the flood to recede and the believers safely got off the ark.

Nuh's Story in the Qur'an

The actual Story of Nuh (AS)’s Ark is mentioned in the Quran in several places, most notably in Surah Nuh (Chapter 71) which is named after him. The story is expanded upon in other sections as well.

“He said, ‘Oh my Lord! I have called my people night and day. But my call only increases their flight in the right way. And every time I have called to them, that You might forgive them, they have thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance” (Quran 71:5-7).

“The people of Nuh rejected the apostles. Behold, their brother Noah said to them: ‘Will you did not fear Allah? I am to you an apostle worthy of all trust. So fear Allah, and obey me. No reward do I ask of you for it; my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds” (26:105-109).

Consequently, he became tired and sad; asked Allah (SWT) to destroy the non-believers. As the Quran says:

“And Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth! If You leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none but wicked disbelievers.” ” (Surah Nuh 71:26-27)

Eventually, when the Ark was built, Prophet Noah (AS) and his believers patiently waited for the command of Allah (SWT). Allah revealed to him that when water miraculously gushed forth from the oven at Prophet Noah's(AS) house, that would be the sign of the start of the flood, and the sign for Prophet Nuh (AS) to take action.

Was the Flood a Global Event?

The flood that destroyed the people of Nuh is described in the Qur'an as a punishment for people who disbelieved in Allah and the message brought by Prophet Nuh and the Great Flood.  There has been some debate over whether this was a global event or an isolated one. According to Islamic teachings, the Flood was intended as a lesson and punishment for a single group of wicked, disbelieving people, and it is not assumed to be a global event, as is believed in other faiths.

Noah builds the Ark and the Great Flood strikes

Allah commanded Noah to build the ark in preparation for the great flood that would wipe out the disbelievers. Nuh (A.S.) proceeded to build the ark far from the sea and endured much ridicule from the polytheists. They found it bizarre that he was constructing an ark away from any water and laughed at him.

When the construction of the ark concluded, Noah awaited Allah’s command. Then, when the torrential downpour began with water surging from the earth, it was time to board the ark. Allah ordered Noah to enter the ark with his family and the believers. Moreover, Allah instructed him to take a male and female pair of each animal, bird, and insect on board. The disbelievers were in a state of confusion when they saw all the animals boarding the ship.

How big was the Ark of Noah?

The structure of the Ark (and the chronology of the flood) are homologous with the Jewish Temple and with Temple worship. Accordingly, Noah's instructions are given to him by God (Genesis 6:14–16): the ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (approximately 134×22×13 m or 440×72×43 ft).

The end of the Great Flood

Eventually, upon Allah’s Command, the great flood ceased. The rain halted, sunshine returned, and things were back to normal. Every single one of those who had persisted in disbelief had perished in the devastating flood. Allah had wiped polytheism off the face of the earth. Noah’s fatherly instincts made him ask Allah about his son, as Allah had vowed to save his family.

Allah the Almighty  told us

“Indeed We sent Noah to his people (he said), ‘I have come to you as a plain warner that you worship none but Allah, surely, I fear for you the torment of a painful Day.' The chiefs of the disbelievers among his people said, ‘We see you but a man like ourselves, nor do we see any follow you but the meanest among us, and they too followed you without thinking. And we do not see in you any merit above us in fact we think you are liars.'” (Al-Qur'an 11:25-27)

Conclusion

The Story of Nuh (A.S.) contains many lessons that Muslims can learn about and benefit from. Hence, we should learn about Nuh (A.S.), both in terms of reading the Quran as well as utilizing other resources. The story of Nuh teaches us all about the importance of obeying Allah and His Messenger.

According to Islam, Noah’s mission was to save a wicked world, plunged in depravity and sin. God charged Prophet Noah (Nuh) with the duty of preaching to his people to make them abandon idolatry and to worship only the One Creator and to live good and pure lives.
