With due apologies to all the morning coffee lovers, and stressing on how important it has a healthy breakfast to begin the day – it is unhealthy to have the coffee before breakfast. It may adversely affect the metabolism and blood sugar, the new research.

Most of us love to have a freshly brewed coffee first thing the early morning after a poor night sleep. But the new studies say that it significantly impairs the metabolism and blood sugar control. By examining the effects of broken sleep and early morning coffee in a range of 29 people with different metabolic markers, university of Bath in the United Kingdom found that the though one night of poor sleep had a lesser impact on the metabolism in a person. But if the person consumes coffee after the poor sleep, it could impact negatively on the glucose level in the blood.

For the first evaluation: The participants who took part in the study had a normal night sleep for about eight hours before consuming a sugary drink with an approximate calorie intake of breakfast that is rich in carbohydrates.

For the second evaluation: The participants were allowed to have a disrupted sleep with an hourly text that they had to respond to for five minutes. And they were given sugary beverage at the end of the sleep cycle for consumption.

For the third evaluation: The participants had to undergo the disrupted night sleep but were given a cup of black coffee 30 minutes after drinking the sugary beverage.

And when the evaluation results were compared against each other, the researchers found that while a single night of disrupted sleep did not affect the participants’ blood glucose or insulin responses, drinking a cup of coffee before having the food affected the responses by 50 percentage.

The study hence was concluded that drinking coffee before consuming a sugary breakfast could delay your ability of the body to process the sugar and affect the metabolic rate and sugar level.

For reducing the health risk such as diabetes and heart diseases, the researchers suggest that it is important to have food first and ensure to keep the blood sugar level within the safer range. It helps in not hindering the health implications.

Coffee contains caffeine, which is the most consumed psychoactive substance by the people across the world. The caffeine absorption in the caffeinated food and beverage are reported to not depend on the conditions such as age, gender, genetics, and health condition or alcohol or nicotine consumption. The effect of caffeine would last for several hours depending upon the quickly it is metabolised.

There is still a lot more to study on the metabolic reaction after consuming coffee and the amount of sleep disruption that contributes to the impairment of the metabolism. Long term implication is also not known yet. But till we get answers to all the additional questions, it is advised to have your favourite cup of coffee after you have your breakfast.
