Whether you are moving to Japan with your family or planning on starting a family in Japan, you might be wondering where to send your child to school. Deciding on the best school for your child can be super tricky, especially with living in a foreign country. Here is a list of some of the best Tokyo international schools recommended by ex-pats:

  • The Global Indian International School. The Global Indian International School, also known as GIIS, is a multi-award winning school based in Tokyo that helps nurture 21st-century skills in its students. The school focuses on providing a well-rounded curriculum to its students, committed to academic quality academics, morality, and ethics.

  • The American School of Japan. Founded in 1902, the American School of Japan includes two campuses, one in Chofu with facilities for up to 1,650 students from more than 47 countries and an Early Learning Center in the Roppongi district in Tokyo between the ages of three and five years old. The Chofu campus features a 570-seat theater, a 25-meter indoor pool, and a Creative Arts Design Center with a robotics lab and fabrication labs.

  • The British School in Tokyo. Founded in 1989 as an alternative to non-British style curriculums across Japan, the British School in Tokyo has a strong traditional British education backbone. This school is home to over 1,000 students from ages three to 18 of more than 60 different nationalities and has a strong reputation for high-quality education. The English National Curriculum provides the basis for the British School’s education program. Students progress through primary school, secondary school, and sixth form just as they would in the United Kingdom, and they take A-Level examinations.

  • Tokyo International School. One of the more recently founded schools on the list, the Tokyo International School in Minato-ku, has a robust digital learning philosophy. Each student and staff member has either a MacBook or an iPad to complement their learning process. Students are guided through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years and Middle Years program, an international curriculum recognized worldwide. The school offers a strong focus on solving global challenges and understanding design and innovation processes to prepare students for the real world beyond education.

  • Nishimachi International School. Located in Moto Azabu, Nishimachi International School has a six-building campus and three rooftop play spaces. With a private camp for overnight field trips in Gunma Prefecture, the school focuses on educating students on the rural side of life by taking them to plant rice one year and harvest it the next year. The school also offers class ski trips in the winter and is great for parents who want their kids to have both academic and outdoor excursions. Founded in 1949 by a group of Tokyo mothers who wanted their kids to experience a more well-rounded education with English learning at the forefront, the school has grown from an opening class of just four students to more than 400 students from more than 30 different countries.
