And so it is that we are still hung by the DNA helix around our necks. Whereas in the current research in labs in the west, it is being accepted that unlike what was thought till 1980s, DNA actually doesn’t control our lives.
Then what does?
DNA is still thought to be that code that can’t be overwritten and is handed down generation to generation, but it is not the entire code that controls and gives us our life. Cell biologists now believe that cells can and do acquire more, and more consequential memories, and even more importantly, they can hand down these memories across generations, much like DNA. They acquire these memories through their interaction with the environment, environment here being everything outside the cell. Many scientists now even consider that organisms are just the colonies of cells cooperating together.
Yes, soon it may be proved that Ayurveda was right all along: we are our environment. And the Hindu view that life is common to all living organisms, that the same spirit permeates every living being, may finally get the scientific proof in coming decades, as it is uncovered how cells interact with each other.
To explain it with an everyday analogy: two houses, identical in brick and mortar. But one with running water, electricity, gas, Internet, TV and computer; the other without these. Brick and mortar house is the DNA, and the above additional items are the programs acquired by the cell. You can see that the cells with the same DNA will behave differently if they have such additional programs, the apps, or they lack them.
This area of research is being discouraged by the Pharma lobby at present, but science can only be slowed down, it can never be blocked.

And this is at the micro level. At the macro level, man acquires, AFTER birth, the most powerful computer of all: the mind. And behaves not as per DNA, but as per the apps installed in this computer, the mind. Think the “right” thoughts and teach them to your children when they are young – do not reward the kids when they throw tantrums; teach them to convince you why they want what they want. This is but one example – but you get the idea.
