As an International medical graduate, there are a set of steps to follow to turn into an enlisted Doctor in Australia.  AMC is the authority of Australia that claims the AMC’s eligibility portal used by the Medical Board of Australia and for enrollment purpose.

AMC is the authority to assess the IMGs keeping the AMC Standard Pathway and is the only authority to provide the international medical graduates with a permit to practice medicine in Australia.

The AMC Standard Pathway

The Pathway is for international medical graduates who are looking for general registration with the Australian Board.

International medical graduates who have a major qualification in surgery and medicine awarded by a training institution recognized by the AMC and the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) may submit an application for evaluation under this pathway.

The AMC Standard Pathway has 3 Main steps

1. Primary source verification through ECFMG/EPIC
2. AMC MCQ-CAT Exam
3. AMC Clinical Exam

1.  Primary source verification through ECFMG/EPIC

When you will pass this examination, you’ll be given the Australian Medical Council certification. Which is a document for landing a job offer in Australia. This enrollment is processed with a different jurisdiction than the AMC, i.e. AHPRA/RACGP, that can be medical regulatory agencies and aren’t evaluation bodies.

What frustrates these international medical graduates that embark on this trip to Australia as a medical practitioner will be the pass rates for these exams. It’s correct that the pass rates change and aren’t a fixed.

According to a recent study, 569 applicants wrote the MCQ Exam in a week-long period (18th – 23rd November 2019).
We also found out that 264 applicants showed up in non-Aussie locations and the rest were Australians.

While the MCQ exam pass mark is 250 out of 500.

An aggregate of 323 applicants passed during this evaluation period, bringing the pass rate above half – 56.76%.
The pass rate in 2018-2019 was 62.6% and in 2017-2018, it was 64.3%.

This means there was a 1.7% decline rate.

Note: Only candidates who score more than 50% in the AMC MCQ Exam are eligible to enrol for the AMC Clinical Exam.

2. AMC MCQ Exam

The AMC MCQ Examination tests knowledge of the principles and practice of medicine in the fields of general practice, internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and gynaecology. It focuses on medical understanding, involving an awareness of the disease process; clinical examination and diagnosis; and analysis, treatment, and management.

The AMC Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) MCQ Examination is 3.5-hour long computer-based multi-choice question examination taken in one session.

The examination consists of 150 A-type MCQs — 120 scored things and 30 (non-scored) pilot things. All of 150 questions have to be tried, and the scored 120 queries are mandatory.

Failure to complete all 120 scored questions in the examination can result in a fail so, an effect on the AMC adaptive scale.

3. AMC Clinical Exam

The AMC Clinical Exam assesses clinical abilities in surgery, medicine, gynaecology, paediatrics, and psychiatry. Also,  assesses the candidate’s ability to deal with patients, their families, and other health workers.

The structure of the AMC clinical exam is 20 channels comprising 14 scored channels, two pilot (non-scored) stations, and 4 rest (non-scored) channels. AMC eliminated the clinical exam retest from 1 January 2019, with a change in passing score. You may find advice on AMC Clinical classes here.

However, only 537 candidates passed and got an AMC certificate.

Well, here's the fun part:

More than 50% were repeated candidates. And there were just under 50% first-timers!

What does this mean?

A yearly pass rate of 27.1% shows you need to be well-prepared before writing the AMC Clinical exam to have any chancing of passing in your first attempt.
