The name Tekken is a classic in fighting games that have been released to date, and it is on par with other legendary names such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but recent offerings from developer Bandai Namco have paled in comparison to original titles like Tekken 2 and Tekken 3. The latest in addition to the series is Tekken 7, and it stirred the pot a little for the franchise, but with it being released two years ago for PC and even longer for the consoles, the eyes of everyone are now set on the possible next edition to the Tekken franchise. This, in fact, can restore the name of the game like the golden years of the initial games.

Will Tekken 8 live up to expectations surrounding it and reinstate Tekken as a household name among gamers? Although there has been a lack of information on the next installment coming out, here is everything that is known about the next edition of this classic fighting game.

Tekken 8 Release Date
The developer Bandai Namco has not yet released an official statement regarding the launch date of Tekken 8. To be kept in mind is that a fighting game is relatively different in the making than other genres. For a fighting game such as Tekken, the mechanics, and controls of the gameplay have been illustrated in the previous editions of the game, and for a new game, this aspect doesn’t need to be touched on. Previous entries have also established the basic mechanics, aesthetic, and a foundation to the story, making work on a subsequent entry a rather straightforward operation relative to traditional game development cycles.

With that in mind, we need to understand that Tekken is a long-running franchise, and its previous editions have been really successful in the market in their time. Tekken 7, for example, has sold more than 3 million copies thus far. So, without a doubt, we can say that the next edition of Tekken is something that we will guarantee. Tekken is so entrenched as a gaming brand that the mediocre critical response to Tekken 7 has had little to no impact on sales.

As far as releasing new games in the franchise is considered, Bandai Namco does not release new games in the series as soon as before like it released 6 games in 10 years (1994 to 2004) during the halcyon days of the late 1990s-early 2000s. This can also be pointed out because the developer Bandai Namco releases spin-offs, crossovers, and other side games during the time period between two major releases. For example, there was a six-year gap between Tekken 6 and Tekken 7. If we use this lull as a frame of reference, Tekken 8 could release anytime between now and 2023. A Japan-only arcade version is also likely to land before the game is available on home consoles and PC, as has been the case for most of Tekken‘s release history.

Tekken 8 News
There has been rather very little news about Tekken 8, as far as trailers go, there has not been one released yet. But then again, at the end of the last game of Tekken 7, Bandai Namco released a cut-scene related to it. The cut-scene seems to set a tone for which direction Tekken 8 may head towards. The cut-scene in question occurs when, after clearing the main storyline chapters, the player defeats Akuma as Devil Kazuya in the ”Special Chapter – Instant Carnage,” as it’s called, and patiently waits for the ending credits to roll on through to the end. The scene is short and ambiguous, but players are sure to notice which way it was pointing. With the death of Heihachi Mishima, the long-running Mishima clan story arc and devil gene debacle will conclude paving the way for Jin to defeat Kazuya in what we imagine is a round-about and characteristically complex manner.

With time passing, a new trailer is bound to emerge. For other news, there has been none from which we could speculate the release time of the next Tekken, or in fact, anything related to it. As far as Bandai Namco is concerned, it has been releasing DLC content for the previous game with new characters and balance changes. The latest edition is as soon as December 2018. For the very most, one can speculate that the release of Tekken Mobile will now let the developer Bandai Namco direct more resources towards Tekken 8.

Apart from the discussions on Reddit, these have been no other hard evidence. The focus is generally on if and how Heihachi may come back from the dead in Tekken 8 and how the teaser at the end of Tekken 7 may play out with Jin having to battle Kazuya.

The ending cut-scene of Tekken 7 left the door open for the next game to follow its footsteps, and the commercial success of the franchise may nudge Bandai Namco to release Tekken 8. But even with that being the case, it will take a fair amount of time with Bandai Namco announcing an official date and finally releasing the game.
