Window basics

You can find windows designed for new construction and replacement. The window for the new construction has a nail – rib, which allows it to be fixed in a rough wall opening. The removable window has no nail. It is anchored to the existing window frame with fasteners running through the window assembly to facilitate installation. When updating existing windows, you usually use replaceable windows, unless the existing frame around the hole needs replacing. Before purchasing replacement windows, make sure you have the exact dimensions of existing rough openings. Windows are either workable (can be opened) or fixed (cannot be opened). The window has at least one sash – a sheet of glass and a frame made of vertical posts and horizontal rails. A panel is a separate sheet of glass framed in a window. Glazing can refer to either glass in a window or the process of attaching glass to a frame. The window frame consists of a head, a jamb, a side jamb, and a threshold.

Types of windows

Each type of window has its own characteristics and characteristics. In addition to the appearance (inside and out), think about their function, whether you want to open them or not, how much light they let through. Also think about how you will clean and maintain them.

Double-leaf windows

Double windows have a classic look. They have operable top and bottom flaps. By lowering the top flap and raising the bottom flap, warmer air near the ceiling can be allowed to escape through the top, while colder air can penetrate through the bottom. Many double windows have sashes that tilt inward, allowing external surfaces to be cleaned from the inside of your home. This feature is especially useful if the windows are on the second floor.

Single-hung windows

Single suspended windows are similar to double ones, but only the lower sash is functional. As with double windows, some models allow the sash to be turned inward to clean the outside.

Sliding windows

Sliding windows have one or more panels that move horizontally along the top and bottom rails, making it easy to open half of the window for ventilation.

Windows accent

Accent windows are available in standard rectangular designs or shapes that offer more visual variety, such as an octagon. These windows are usually fixed and do not allow ventilation.

Glass Block Windows

Glass block windows are constructed from separate blocks glued together with mortar. Thick, burglar-resistant glass provides privacy while allowing light into your home. The glass windows are fixed, but some have a built-in opening that can be opened. Other models designed for laundry use include an outlet for the dryer vent hose.

Basement Bunker Window

The basement bunker windows can be opened from the bottom and opened from the top. They can provide airflow to the basement and are usually located low on the outside wall.
