When our Sharjah tech office started expanding into a second floor, noise became a facilities problem we could no longer defer. The building sits on a busy arterial road. Open-plan layout, glass partitions throughout, a boardroom that shares a wall with the street-facing façade. Conference calls were becoming an embarrassment.

I manage facilities for a mid-size software company — about 140 staff across two floors in Sharjah’s technology zone. We are not an acoustics firm. But after going through three supplier quotes and two rounds of installation that did not deliver what was promised, I now know more about acoustic glazing than I ever expected to.

The supplier that finally resolved the problem was shaheenacoustic. This post is about what that difference actually looked like in practice, for anyone going through the same evaluation.

What the first two suppliers got wrong

Both of the earlier suppliers quoted us double-glazed units and described them as “acoustic glass.” Technically, double glazing does reduce some sound transmission. But the term “acoustic glass” covers a wide range of actual performance, and neither supplier was specific about what we were actually getting.

The questions I eventually learned to ask — and could not get clear answers to from either of them:

  • What is the STC rating of the unit being quoted? Sound Transmission Class is the standard measurement for how much sound a glazing unit blocks. Neither supplier quoted a specific STC figure. One described the glass as “high performance.” That is not a number.
  • Is there an interlayer in the laminate, and if so, what type? This is the question that separates genuine acoustic glazing from standard laminated glass with a marketing label. Standard laminated glass uses a PVB interlayer primarily for safety. Acoustic laminated glass uses a specialist acoustic interlayer — a viscoelastic PVB or similar compound — specifically engineered to dampen sound wave transmission through the glass itself. Neither of the first two suppliers could tell me what interlayer their glass used.
  • What is the air gap specification between panes, and is it asymmetric? An asymmetric air gap — different distances between panes — reduces resonance at specific frequencies, which is particularly relevant for road noise and low-frequency hum from external HVAC equipment. Standard double glazing uses equal gaps. Proper acoustic double glazing often does not.
  • Is the frame thermally and acoustically decoupled from the building structure? Sound travels through frames and fixings, not just glass. A high-performance glass unit installed in a frame that bridges directly to the concrete will transmit more noise than the glass rating suggests.

The first installation we went ahead with — based on the most confident presentation rather than the most detailed specification — reduced road noise noticeably but left a low-frequency hum in the boardroom that made certain calls still uncomfortable. We had paid for acoustic glass and received standard double glazing with a different name.

What a technically grounded supplier conversation looks like

The Shaheen Acoustic site visit started differently. Their technical consultant asked about the noise sources before asking about the windows — road traffic frequency and volume, whether there was mechanical plant noise from the building roof, what the boardroom was primarily used for and at what ambient levels.

The specification they then proposed was explicit on every point the earlier suppliers had been vague about:

  • Acoustic interlayer technology specified by name. The laminated glass units used a viscoelastic acoustic interlayer rather than standard PVB. This is the detail that actually changes acoustic performance at mid and high frequencies — the range where speech intelligibility on calls is most affected. The interlayer is engineered to convert sound energy into heat rather than transmit it through the glass, which is a fundamentally different mechanism from thickness alone.
  • STC rating documented in the proposal. A specific, verifiable figure against an industry standard — not a descriptor. That number can be checked, compared, and held to.
  • Asymmetric air gap in the double-glazed unit. Specified and explained. The different gap widths between panes shift the resonance frequency of the unit so that it does not amplify specific noise bands — which is precisely what was causing the residual hum in the boardroom after the first installation.
  • Frame decoupling method included in scope. The installation specification included acoustic isolation tape and flexible sealant at all frame-to-structure interfaces. This is not standard in most glazing installations and makes a measurable difference to flanking noise transmission.

The result in the office

The boardroom is now usable for calls without a noise disclaimer at the start of every meeting. The low-frequency hum that the first installation left behind is gone. Street noise during the installation windows we tested was reduced to a level that no longer registers as a distraction during normal conversation.

The open-plan area facing the road is noticeably quieter at the windows. Staff who used to move away from the street-side desks during peak traffic hours have stopped doing that. That is a small thing that only shows up in how people arrange themselves in the space, but it is a real measure of whether the treatment worked.

Three questions worth asking any acoustic glazing supplier

Based on what this process cost us in time and in a first installation that underdelivered, here is what I would ask upfront:

  • What interlayer does the laminated glass use, and what is its acoustic rating? If the answer is “standard PVB” or the supplier does not know, you are looking at safety glass marketed as acoustic glass.
  • What is the STC rating of the complete unit as installed, including the frame? Glass STC and installed system STC are different numbers. Ask for the system figure.
  • How is the frame isolated from the building structure in the installation spec? If acoustic isolation at the frame interface is not in the scope, flanking noise will limit the performance of even a well-specified glass unit.

The Sharjah tech zone has a number of glazing suppliers and a number of acoustic glazing suppliers. They are not the same category, even when the brochures look similar.
