derecho al olvido ley is the right of a person to demand that the information he or she has posted on the internet or within the bookmarks of a web browser should be removed, and the government must comply if the person proves that this information was published without his or her permission and the information is no longer relevant.

The court held that while Google is not obliged to delete the information under the Data Protection Directive, it has “an obligation to make a concerted effort to erase the right to be forgotten from its website”.

“While Google has so far resisted undertaking this collective undertaking, it must give consideration to the Court's ruling,” the court said in a statement.

Google said it would review the decision and that it was disappointed that the Court did not go further and require the company to “go further and ensure the removals are done in a transparent manner”.

Google's Vice-President for EU Government Affairs, Matt Brittin, said that the company is happy with the court's ruling, but that it does not remove such information for a person's privacy.

“We recognise the right of individuals to have data about them removed from internet search results where that's the only way they can be properly accessed. We strive to strike the right balance between the public interest in access to information and the right to privacy,” Brittin said.
