Perhaps you pulled a muscle while exercising and believe you might have avoided it if you had done more stretching beforehand.

If you're reading this blog, you're probably one of two people: either you're a great stretcher who stretches frequently, or you're aware that you don't try enough and often end up having Myotherapy Fitzroy.

If you're the former, congratulations!

Don't worry if you're the latter; you're not alone, and it's never too late to start!

First and foremost, what exactly does stretching entail?

Stretching is a great approach to increasing your body's flexibility in the long and short term. Whether you favor active or static stretching, both are useful in keeping your body limber.

Stretch your major muscle groups.

Cover your major muscle groups first – butt, legs, arms, chest, and back – for the best results.

It's also a good idea to pay special attention to areas you frequently use because they're more likely to experience tightness, injuries, or cramps.

Stretch before and after your workout.

If you don't think you'll be able to commit to bed stretches or stretches while waiting for the water to boil or while watching your favorite show, focus on pushing your major muscle groups before and after your workout (after warming up)

If you make things simple, the habit will stick.

We bite off more than we can chew, which leads to the death of most new habits. Don't try to squeeze in 20 minutes of exercise every evening — life will get in the way, and you'll give up. Instead, break your habits into smaller chunks and spread them throughout the day.

Begin with gentle leg and back stretches before getting out of bed in the morning, arm stretches while waiting for the water to boil, or soft neck stretches while watching TV.

The best way to improve your body's flexibility over time is to make stretches an unconscious and easy part of your daily routine.

What happens if I don't stretch at all?

If you never stretch, you risk muscle soreness, stiffness, pulled muscles, and long-term lifestyle effects on the body. The good news is that science is divided on whether stretching significantly benefits our health.  Stretching can help you if you're stiff and sore, prone to pulled muscles, or if you find yourself hunched (over a desk, wheel, or bike) for long periods.

Stretching is the way to go if you want to improve your overall flexibility or if it makes you feel good. However, you may be correct if you never stretch and don't seem to need it. To be safe, we recommend that you discuss this with your myotherapist.

Consult a myotherapist.

Few things feel better than stretching a muscle that is in desperate need of it. If you'd like to stretch more but aren't sure where to begin, speak with your myotherapist about developing a stretching routine tailored to your schedule and body's needs. They'll assist you in identifying areas that require extra attention, reducing tension, and mitigating the long-term effects of your lifestyle before it's too late.
