The recently proposed transformational initiative, eManifest proposed by Environmental Protection Agency is designed to establish an innovative system to track hazardous waste shipments electronically. The popularly known eManifest system modernizes the process of hazardous waste tracking. It not only saves valuable time and government resources but also reduces the burden associated with paper manifests. It simply offers amazing benefits including:

  • Cost Savings
  • Provides accurate information, tracking and analyzing the amount of waste
  • Keeping track of records on waste shipments
  • Notifies at the earliest about any discrepancies or other issues in any of the shipments
  • Ensures compliance monitoring of waste shipments

In India, state governments like Tamil Nadu and other local authorities are developing strategies to implement the same eManifest system to track hazardous waste shipments. The leading environmentalist Ritik Kumar Sinha explores how the state authorities can make this possible by finding some other alternatives to track waste shipments.

According to him, the nation needs to modify the traditional methods because the modification is vital for the current hazardous waste manifest system to increase the effectiveness of compliance monitoring of waste shipments by HW handlers. Ritik Kumar Sinha further states that technological advancement in this area will further make jobs easier for HW handlers and it will also boost the visibility of manifest data. By implementing similar resources to our current manifest system, we can effectively minimize environmental impact.

Major Challenges in India

To effectively implement the principles of sustainable development, the government of India is focusing on regulating strict guidelines to state authorities and municipalities to remain environmentally accountable. Expressing his concern about this, Ritik Sinha says that it is a great irony in our country that there are separate rules and separate compliances and all the states don’t bother to come together to deal with any challenge.

As the country is facing a massive waste management challenge, there’s a rapid need of implementing modified resources to upgrade the current hazardous waste manifest system. Due to the current flawed manifest system, there is mismanagement everywhere and we don’t have adequate disposal mechanisms. However, local authorities are developing plans to deposit hazardous wastes at a dump yard but the current efforts are missing coordination, proper training and guidance, and the lack of technological resources.

The key to efficient waste management

To implement a developed system for waste management and disposal in India, local authorities should need to consider innovative waste processing strategies. With proper segregation of waste and ensuring that it goes through different streams of recycling, they can make it possible. According to Ritik Kumar Sinha, a developed system is therefore required like the eManifest system to track hazardous waste shipments.

Currently, India is also facing the limitation of costly transportation of this method, and therefore, right now, we need to find the right alternatives and other resources for the eManifest system. According to a report presented a few years back, the nation generates more than 15,000 MT of waste every day. Although it generates employment opportunities for around 500,000 rag-pickers, we still need to develop solid plans to convert the huge amount of waste into renewable energy and organic manure. Ritik Kumar Sinha suggests this approach as the most effective way to reduce the volume of waste that the nation generates every day.

Technological Advancement is essential

To effectively process, treat and dispose of hazardous waste, India needs to bring some innovation to its existing waste management approach. Although, development plans are already being initiated to transform energy from waste and this crucial SWM element will further offer extreme support to numerous energy plants in India to operate at their full potential.

Again, to reduce the landfill sites, the nation has innovative strategies to install more waste-to-compost and bio-methanation plants. The government is planning beyond these levels by proposing interesting business proposals to the private sector. It helps in utilizing hazardous waste as co-fuel or co-raw material in their manufacturing processes.

Moreover, under the New India Smart City Agenda, around 100 cities have been targeted to redraw solid waste management plans and come up with innovative strategies to change lifestyles by introducing enhanced and effective waste management systems. Ritik Sinha is consistently making the best efforts to make people aware of implementing the right steps and segregating their waste at the right sources so that it can be easily collected. With easy, quick, and cost-effective methods of collecting waste, authorities can easily recover the amount of waste and this is how an individual can contribute to protecting the environment. In contrast, to control the issue of waste management, if we are not in the state of implementing the eManifest system right now, we should look for some other cost-effective alternatives and to encourage the recycling of waste on a massive scale.
