Muscular dystrophy refers to a collection of approximately 30 diseases that cause muscular weakening and deterioration. It becomes more difficult to move as the disease worsens. It can impair respiration and cardiac function in certain circumstances, resulting in life-threatening consequences.
The consequences of muscular dystrophy might be modest, increasing slowly over a normal lifespan, significant impairment, or deadly, depending on the kind and degree.
Symptoms
Early symptoms:
frequent falls
learning disabilities, such as developing speech later than usual
difficulty with running and jumping
walking on toes
a waddling gait
pain and stiffness in the muscles
difficulty sitting up or standing
As time goes on, the following become more likely:
the muscles of the heart can be weakened, leading to cardiac problems
a shortening of muscles and tendons, further limiting movement
difficulty swallowing, with a risk of aspiration pneumonia. A feeding tube is sometimes necessary.
curvature of the spine can be caused if muscles are not strong enough to support its structure
in ability to walk
breathing problems can become so severe that assisted breathing is necessary
Although there is no method to prevent or reverse muscular dystrophy, several types of therapy and medication treatment can enhance a person's quality of life and slow the course of symptoms.
