According to the de-addiction center at Ludhiana's Civil Hospital, there has been a significant rise in child heroin and cannabis addicts since April 2022. Ninety-three children below the age of 12 have been admitted to the Nasha Mukti Kendra in Ludhiana district so far this year. The worst-case scenario was when an eight-year-old child from Tibba Road was admitted.
"Out of every hundred addicts coming to Nasha Mukti Kendra in Ludhiana, there are five to six children below the age of 12," said the doctor. "This is a cause for concern as children at such a young age are prone to severe psychic disability." These children have been sent to the children's de-addiction center in Kapurthala since the Ludhiana Civil Hospital is not equipped to handle child addicts.
Doctors believe the increase in young addicts is due to a shift in the local drug trafficking network. Previously, children were used as couriers for drugs and had little or no access to narcotics. Now, children are easily exposed to heroin and other dangerous drugs.
