My family has worked out that I am the person you ask about this, so a few times a year I sit down with someone and we go through the same four questions. It takes twenty minutes and it has saved a lot of wasted subscriptions.

Question one is about the guide, not the marketing. I want to see the listings load. If programme names are missing and it is just a wall of channel numbers, that tells you more than any feature list will. Accurate listings data is genuinely difficult engineering - the BBC has written about the work behind reliable programme information (https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog) - and a service that cannot manage it is cutting corners somewhere less visible.

Question two is about a busy hour. Not ten in the morning on a wired connection, but eight in the evening with everyone else online. Everything stutters eventually, so what I watch for is recovery. A good player quietly drops quality and carries on. A bad one throws you back to a menu and loses your place.

Question three is the second screen. Most homes need two at once. A silent lockout is something you want to find on day one rather than halfway through something you care about.

Question four is what happens when you want to leave. If cancelling is buried, that is a decision the company has already made about how it treats you.

That is a short checklist I keep, because I kept forgetting the same questions. Wikipedia has a reasonable primer on how IPTV works underneath (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Protocol_television) if you want the technical picture.
