Sony's latest flagship product is their fastest, with a range of new features and unparalleled cameras; but the design is also a dramatic change. You either like the XPERIA XZ2, or hate it, a stunning camera with 1080p super slow motion and 4K HDR video recording, and a gorgeous HDR screen. State-of-the-art performance and battery life make it a great device for anyone to use: but only if you have an outdated and clumsy design.
Design and specifications:
With a gorgeous 5.7-inch display, we'll discuss it in detail later, and you'll notice that it's not an edge-to-edge design. There are a few millimeters of borders on the left and right sides, and a border of about one centimeter on the top and bottom. There is at least no gap.
With a curved glass back and a metal edge, it weighs only 6.98 ounces (198 grams) and is slightly thick. The back of the glass means you have wireless charging and NFC, which is essential in any phone, and I am even more surprised by its absence, but do not include a wireless charger, so you need to buy it yourself. However, the apparent curve also causes the device to be very unstable on a flat surface. Since the contact area is small, it tends to slide a lot. Considering that the glass tends to pick up the fingerprint, you almost certainly want to make a box on it, preferably a bit of sticky rubber to prevent it from running away so much.
The placement of buttons is also unique. There is a volume rocker, an on / off switch and a special camera shutter, each one from top to bottom along the right side of the frame. As for the dedicated buttons, a camera shutter is generally appreciated. However, I think there is a reason why most manufacturers push all buttons up: This will prevent you from being accidentally pressed when you touch the phone.
Is this a fingerprint sensor or a camera lens?
As you would expect from a flagship, the fingerprint reader is fast and accurate. But the placement of the sensor on the right in the middle of the back panel feels awkward, and I occasionally wondered why it did not work. It did not work because my finger lay on the camera lens instead. It feels the same and is in a place where other phones would normally place their fingerprint sensors – about an inch above it.
Full HD + HDR IPS display:
That's a lot of acronyms. The screen is 5.7 inches wide in 16: 9 formats, perfect for movies. The resolution is Full HD +, that is 2160 x 1080 pixels. The + means “slightly higher than Full HD,” which is 1920 x 1080 px or more commonly known as 1080p. You have to wait for the premium model if you want a 4K screen. However, I wonder if you really need such a high resolution on such a small display. On a 60-inch TV, 4K is certainly great. It does not matter on a 5.7-inch mobile screen, and you'll experience a performance hit. The IPS-based TRILUMINOS display provides the ability to view HDR content that includes a wider gamut, resulting in blacker blacks and a richer look (what is HDR?). Both YouTube and Netflix are officially offering HDR encoded content. However, the XPERIA XZ2 also tries to convert other content to HDR (HDR) levels.
