One condition that is not getting enough attention is glaucoma. Each year, a week is dedicated to spread awareness of this debilitating condition known as the World Glaucoma Week. This year it was celebrated between March 11-17. Around the world, about 4% of the world's population suffers from glaucoma.
What is Glaucoma?Glaucoma is an eye condition that affects the optic nerve. Glaucoma damages the nerve over a period of time and if this condition is left untreated it is a leading cause of eye damage and blindness. Unlike other conditions like hypertension that has specific treatments, glaucoma on the other hand does not have a known treatment. Managing it and keeping it from getting worse is the only avenue of glaucoma sufferers.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in adults over 40 years old. Without symptoms or warning that you have the condition it is difficult to know if you have it. It is not yet known the exact cause of glaucoma and it is important that you always remain on the lookout with regards to your eye health. It is crucial that you consider protecting your eyes regularly.
