Most people who walk into a steel yard asking for "hollow pipe" leave with whatever the dealer has in stock. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it creates fabrication headaches for the next three weeks.
Here's what you actually need to know before you order.

"Hollow pipe" covers a lot of ground
Walk onto any Indian construction site and you'll hear hollow pipe, MS hollow pipe, box pipe, hollow section all used interchangeably. They're not the same thing, and buying the wrong shape for an application costs you time, money, and weld rework.
There are 3 shapes. Each one behaves differently under load.
CHS — Circular Hollow Section. Round pipe. The geometry distributes stress evenly in every direction, which makes it ideal for columns, struts, transmission towers, and any member that takes load from multiple angles. It also handles torsion better than any other hollow section shape.
SHS — Square Hollow Section. Four equal sides. Easier to fabricate than round pipe because flat faces align cleanly at joints. Good for railings, fencing, machine frames, gates, and any application where visual consistency matters as much as structural performance.
RHS — Rectangular Hollow Section. Two longer sides, two shorter ones. More stiffness in one axis than the other — which is exactly what you want for beams, purlins, conveyor frames, and horizontal support members carrying directional loads.
Picking the right shape isn't complicated once you know what load you're dealing with. Multi-directional compression? CHS. Aesthetics and flat-face joints? SHS. Horizontal spanning? RHS.
The standard that governs all of this
In India, structural hollow sections fall under IS 4923. Circular hollow sections for structural purposes come under IS 1161. These aren't bureaucratic paperwork — they set wall thickness tolerances, yield strength minimums, and the testing requirements that confirm your pipe will behave the way your structural engineer assumed when they specified it.

Low-cost suppliers sometimes under-run wall thickness and charge you for nominal spec. The way to catch this: a calibrated vernier caliper at goods receipt, before fabrication starts.
Straightness matters too. A pipe that's slightly bowed creates alignment problems at every joint. On a long frame with 20 or 30 members, those small errors compound badly.
Consistent dimensions across a full batch is what you're actually paying for with a branded supplier. Individual pieces from a rerolling unit might look fine. The problem shows up when you weld piece 8 to piece 12 and they don't sit flush because the dimensional variance between the two is 1.5 mm.
Surface finish is the third variable. Black (hot-rolled) finish is standard. For outdoor applications, galvanized or painted variants hold up significantly better. If your project is in a coastal belt or high-humidity zone, that's not optional — it's a maintenance cost you're pushing forward or eliminating upfront.
