HOMEOPATHY for INSOMNIA

A good night's sleep will make you feel happier. Isn’t that what they mean? But what if sleep doesn't come at all?

While most of us have experienced a few sleepless nights, this is not a common occurrence for many. It's not normal. See post for proper knowledge about insomnia.

To function at their best, an adult requires 7-9 hours of sleep each night. What happens if we only get 3-5 hours of sleep each night?

  • Your immune system is compromised which can lead to more frequent illnesses.
  • Your heart health can be affected, increasing your risk of a stroke or heart attack.
  • Your cancer risk is increasing
  • You have poor memory and brain fog
  • Your libido could drop or disappear completely
  • You gain weight
  • Your diabetes risk is increasing
  • You may be accident-prone
  • Your skin will suffer

This is not a beautiful picture.

What can you do to get rid of insomnia? You can make simple changes to your life.

  • Stick to a bedtime routine. You can choose a time and a routine that you like and stick to it nightly. This will allow your body and mind to relax.
  • Regular exercise is important
  • Get plenty of natural sunlight throughout the day
  • Before you go to bed, meditate or practise mindfulness.
  • Limit screen time before bed
  • Keep your bedroom tech-free/low tech.
  • While these tips will improve your sleep quality, they won't address the root cause. Many people find it hard to sleep at night and are often overthinking what time they should be sleeping. Homoeopathy can help with this.
  • Your constitutional remedy is the best way to overcome chronic insomnia. This is the best remedy for you as an individual, your mind, body, and spirit. Your homoeopath will discuss with you all your symptoms, likes and dislikes as well as who you are personally. The homoeopath will recommend the best treatment for you.

There are some home remedies you can try to alleviate the problem.

  • Coffea cruda is a coffee drink that causes an excited, awake state. Homeopathically prepared coffee can be used to treat this condition. This can be caused by joy, pleasure, excitement, unexpected bad news, as well as sudden happy surprises. This state can also be caused by excessive wine consumption or fatigue from long travels. The mind simply wakes up when someone tries to fall asleep.
  • Nux vomica: In classic Nux vomica, the patient may fall asleep quickly, but wake up at 3:00 or 4 a.m. with a lot of mental activity and worries. The patient will feel able to fall asleep when it is time to wake up, but must instead get up feeling tired and irritable. This is often caused by excessive use of stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, and wine.
  • Aconite – A patient who needs Aconite is anxious and restless with a fearful kind of fear. This is often seen in the initial stages of an acute, sudden illness. It can also occur after a chill. This state can also be caused by shock or fear, such as an accident, natural disaster or operation.
  • Chamomilla – Those who need Chamomilla are often in an irritable or uncivil condition. They may be irritable or in pain and feel “unable to stand it”. You may notice a strange symptom, such as being tired during the day but unable or unwilling to sleep at night. Teething infants may be irritable if they insist on being carried or if adults are willing to walk on the ground.
  • Arnica – This remedy is for people suffering from insomnia who have been in an accident recently or are under strain. This is called “jet lag” by travellers. My patients regularly use Arnica to combat jet lag. This is a common practice that I have seen work well for. Patients may feel tired and unable to sleep. For those with nightmares about the injuries or accidents they have been in, Arnica is a great option.
  • Cocculus: Those who are exhausted from sleeplessness need this treatment. It is often caused by sleep deprivation due to night watching, nursing or other ill people. They may wake up and start again, interrupting their sleep. This remedy is often needed by patients who are emotionally sensitive, intolerant of contradictions, and/or extremely sad. Many people who respond to this remedy experience motion sickness.
  • Gelsemium is a remedy for insomnia. People who use it are often tired and dull, sometimes even trembling. They cannot fall asleep completely. Their bodies remain still, and although they appear to be asleep externally, they are actually on the edge of sleep. They may even start to fall asleep. They may experience restlessness or excessive sleep when they finally fall asleep. They may also experience a nervous irritation similar to the Coffea patient. This is due to the anticipation of an upcoming event.
