Since its launch in October, Honda Malaysia recently has announced today that they achieved a total sales of 60,469 vehicles in 2020, maintaining their top position in non-national models for the sixth consecutive year. The sales figure was mainly attributed to the hit models of Honda City(34%), Honda Civic (20%) and Honda HR-V(17%) .

However, the figure was 29.3 percent lower than the 85,418 units sold in 2019. This is largely due to the market challenge posed by Mobile Control Orders/Conditional Movement Orders (MCO, CMCO).

City breaks record

The brand new City set a record for the highest monthly sales in history, with more than 5,500 homes sold in December 2020 alone. The new B-segment sedan was launched in October 2020, and the total bookings so far reached 15,200, making it one of the highest booking numbers for new models launched by Honda Malaysia in the second half of 2020.

Since its launch in December last year, Honda Malaysia has delivered approximately 10,800 vehicles to customers, more than three times the 3,200 delivered by Proton X50 last year.

Malaysians like their cars to be fully loaded, which shows that 1.5V is the most popular variant – getting 52% of cumulative sales. Remember our article about white being the most popular new car color in the world? Platinum white pearl is the most popular color among customers (26% of total sales), which is proven here again.

The central region of Peninsular Malaysia accounts for 48% of the city's total sales, followed by the southern region (19%) and the northern region (18%).

2020 Honda City specs and variants

To recap, this city has three different pure-petrol models (S, E and V) and a hybrid one (RS). Making its world debut in Malaysia, the 2-motor i-MMD e:HEV RS variant does not yet have its price tag and is expected to be launched early this year.

The City currently has a variety of gasoline models on sale which use a new DOHC i-VTEC 1.5-liter, naturally- aspirated four-cylinder mill with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) — good enough to meet 121 PS and 145 Nm requirements. Its competitors are the facelifted 2021 Toyota Vios and the brand new 2020 Nissan Almera.
