What are the blood investigations needed for evaluating male fertility status?
Know the obstacles to parenthood through a detailed blood analysis. (What are the blood tests to check male infertility?)
Male infertility plays a role in about 40% of all infertility cases. Fertility tests for men usually include a physical examination, a semen analysis & some blood tests to determine the cause of infertility.
The blood tests are:
1. Hormone Evaluation: Diagnosis of male infertility requires hormonal blood tests. Hormones produced by the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and testicles play a crucial role in sexual development and sperm production and maturation. Abnormalities in the hormonal system contribute to infertility. Hormonal blood analysis reveals the level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, Inhibin B and other such hormones.
2. Genetic tests. When sperm concentration is low, there could be a genetic cause. A chromosomal analysis can reveal any subtle changes in the Y chromosome. There are a set of karyotyping tests that are done to evaluate other genetic abnormalities like trisomy 21, chromosomal deletions, duplications, translocations or inversions – which can be the cause for infertility or can cause abnormality in the baby.
If facing fertility issues, advice from an Andrologist is highly recommended.
