What is an upgrade?
When you change your economy class ticket to a business one, it is then called an upgrade.
If there are seats available, you can purchase an upgraded ticket before check-in or buy it offline during registration. In some cases, you might be provided an online last-minute paid upgrade at check-in. Updates can be provided for each flight segment-not for the entire journey. Sometimes, the price of this option can be reduced. If you purchase this upgrade at a discounted price, the accumulated Miles and XP that you earned will be the same as stated in the confirmation email of the original booking. Then comes the central question: “When can I upgrade my flight with KLM?”
The answer is simple, From the minute you schedule your ticket to the instant you check-in, you can enhance to business class by requesting the KLM Customer Service Center or make adjustments through “My Trip.” Your check-in process starts 30 hours from the departure time (24 hours before flying from the US to the US).

Before check-in, you can upgrade online through “My Journey.” At check-in, you can purchase upgrades at the KLM Reservations website or through the KLM app. The update can be done offline at the airport through agents or kiosks, or through the KLM Customer Service Center, onboard, or in the lounge (if available) over the phone.

Flying Blue now offers more bonus mileage upgrade options for flights from KLM Reservations! All you need to do is apply for a mileage upgrade at the airport check-in counter. Depending on the number of seats, you will be upgraded to World Business Class and can enjoy 45,500 miles of bonus miles.
For Qualified Upgrade
To be eligible for an award-mile upgrade, you must have at least 45,500 award miles balance in your Flying Blue account.
Passengers who have not obtained qualifying class reservations can “purchase” Class B class by purchasing the latter ticket reservation classes’ by paying the regular fees necessary to be eligible for mileage upgrades.
