How do you calculate square footage of a room?

Measuring a room for flooring, paint, or a rental listing starts with one number: square footage. Multiply length by width, with both measurements in feet, to get the area in square feet.

For a rectangular bedroom that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, the calculation is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That covers the floor only; walls and ceilings need separate measurements when you order materials.

Odd-shaped rooms need a little planning. Split the space into rectangles or squares that you can measure cleanly. A living room with an alcove might become two rectangles: calculate the main area and the bump-out, then add them. If a closet is not part of the area you need, leave it out or list it separately.

Always use the same unit. If one wall is measured in inches, convert first. Twelve inches equal one foot, so 126 inches is 10.5 feet. Mixed units are a common reason estimates go wrong. For a triangle, use (base × height) ÷ 2; for a circle, use π times radius squared.

Ceilings matter for paint, not floor square footage. Doorways and built-ins normally remain in the floor total unless a contractor asks for net usable area. Carpet and tile suppliers often recommend adding 5–10% for cuts, waste, and pattern matching.

Write each length and width on a quick sketch before multiplying. Calculate each section separately, add the results, and round up slightly when buying materials. If you need a fast arithmetic check, a squarefootagecalculator.org can confirm the total from the same measurements

For planning, measure from wall to wall rather than guessing from furniture. Record whether a measurement includes a recess, bay, or built-in cabinet. If the room has several sections, label them on the sketch so you do not add one area twice. A calculator is useful for checking the arithmetic, but careful measuring is what makes the estimate reliable.
