When your heartbeat instantaneously becomes more recognizable in terms of speed, such a condition is commonly referred to as Heart palpitations. Your heart suddenly starts beating in an irregular fashion, and you get a sensation of pounding for a few seconds/minutes only. Some patients often complain about feeling these sensations in their throat and neck. Primarily, these are associated with individuals who are constantly having stress or anxiety either due to work pressure or over consumption of nicotine, caffeine, or alcohol. Some pregnant women have also reported these symptoms, but they are mild. In extremely rare circumstances, these irregular heartbeats can be associated with serious heart conditions. Palpitations can also occur due to thyroid problems, atrial fibrillation, or heart failure (extremely rare). Following are the techniques that can be used in order to calm your heart palpitations:

  1. Perform relaxation exercises: Stress has become a modern day pandemic and is associated with a wide variety of diseases. It can cause heart palpitations, further leading to heart diseases. Specific relaxation techniques are helpful in reducing heart palpitations: Long deep breathing, journaling, spending time with family and friends, taking breaks from work routinely, and daily practicing Yoga.
  2. Perform Valsava movement: It is a breathing technique and is often reported to calm heart palpitation and restore the normal beating of the heart. In order to do valsva exercise, one needs to perform the following steps:
    1. Pinch your nose from the outside.
    2. Shut/close your mouth.
    3. Try exhaling all the air from the lungs.
    4. Hold this position as if you are passing stool.
    5. Repeat steps a-d for 20 seconds.
  3. Consuming a balanced diet: There is a very famous English adage “We are what we eat”. It means that we will essentially become the same whatever we are eating. If we eat a fatty, sugary diet, we will become fat, lethargic, and vice versa. A balanced diet has all the components such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in quantities required by the body. It consists of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats such as different types of nuts.
  4. Perform outdoor exercise regularly: Regular workout is essential for the overall health of an individual. If you are doing it outdoors, it's best, but even if you can’t, at least do it indoors. Exercise not only helps in relaxation of mind but also helps you in developing overall fitness level.
  5. Play sports: Due to the hectic schedule of modern-day life, sports have taken a back seat in our lives. We should play some sport for at least 20mins daily. It not only improves our blood flow but also eliminates toxins from our bodies in the form of sweat.
  6. Avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks: Alcohol is the root cause of many diseases in modern society, and so do caffeinated drinks. There are many people who prefer coffee or soda water instead of plain water in order to stay awake. Little did they realize that these small amounts of caffeine that we are putting in our body are dangerous as we will become habitual to it, and sooner or later, it will start affecting our body organs.
  7. Keep a check on your cholesterol and blood pressure: Irregular eating habits such as fast foods and cold drinks, if consumed for a long duration, often harm our internal organs. These are manifested in the form of bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Too much fluctuation of blood pressure is very harmful to the heart, and so does high cholesterol level. High cholesterol level indicates that the heart has to put in more effort for the same work, which affects the proper functioning of the heart.
