Aging happens to the best of us, but with age, our joints wear down and mobility issues become a concern. But age shouldn’t slow you down or keep you from having free reign of your entire home!

Stairlifts are a great investment for those with limited mobility or who are recovering from a surgery that limits mobility. They give you safe access to all floors in your home by providing convenience for those who need to use the stairs but can’t or shouldn’t for safety reasons. When you need a stairlift, you likely have many questions: what are the benefits, is my home suited for one and how does it even work?

How does a stairlift work?

Stairlifts all have the same purpose — to conveniently help you get between levels of the home and restore your independence without needing to rely on others to help you.

How easy are they to use? Lifts will travel up and down the stairway (or a curved staircase) with the simple push of a button. While there are some differences between various makes and models of stairlifts, they are all easy to operate and come with numerous safety features.

Lifts like the Savaria K2 Plus Straight Stairlift are designed with a swivel and lock seat for added stability getting on and off the chair, a retractable seatbelt, non-slip footrest, and over-speed brake. And the Pinnacle SL300 Stairlift even works during power outages, providing up to 40 trips up and down so riders can have peace of mind.

How to get in and out of a stairlift

If the rider is getting on at the bottom of a landing, make sure the armrests and seat are folded down. When sitting down, ensure your hands are able to comfortably reach the armrests, and your knees touch the front of the seat. Once seated, fold down the footrest using your foot or hand, whichever is more convenient for you. You are then ready to move the stairlift to the upper floor.

If the rider is getting on at the top of a landing, first make sure the armrests, footrest and seat are completely folded down. If the seat can swivel, swivel the chair so it locks into place away from the stairs so you can sit down. Then fasten the seatbelt and swivel the chair to its normal position so you can begin the descent.
