How I Would Start Learning Digital Marketing in Kolkata as a Beginner

When I first started looking into digital marketing, I found the field a little confusing.

There are so many things to learn — SEO, Google Ads, social media, content marketing, analytics, email marketing, and now a lot of AI-based tools as well. For someone starting from zero, it can be difficult to understand where to begin.

If I were starting again as a beginner in Kolkata, I would keep the learning process simple.

1. Start with the basics

Before jumping into tools, I would first understand how digital marketing actually works. Things like search engines, websites, online advertising, social media and customer journeys give you a good foundation.

2. Learn SEO

SEO is one of the areas I would focus on early. Learning keyword research, on-page SEO, technical basics, link building and Google Search Console can help you understand how websites get organic traffic.

3. Get familiar with paid advertising

After SEO, I would learn the basics of Google Ads and Meta Ads. Understanding campaigns, audiences, keywords, budgets and conversions is much easier when you actually create and test campaigns.

4. Work on a real project

This is probably the part I would take most seriously.

Instead of only watching tutorials, I would create a small website or work on an existing project. Try publishing content, doing keyword research, setting up analytics and measuring the results.

Even a small project can teach you things that aren't obvious from a course or tutorial.

5. Build a portfolio

Once you have some practical work, document it. A portfolio doesn't necessarily need to contain huge campaigns. It can include SEO work, content samples, campaign exercises, website improvements or analytics reports.

6. Keep learning

Digital marketing changes regularly, so learning doesn't really stop after completing a course. New platforms, advertising features and tools keep appearing.

For beginners in Kolkata who prefer structured classroom or practical training, there are also local options such as W3 Web School, where the focus is on learning digital marketing through practical training and projects.

But regardless of where you learn, I think the most important thing is to practice what you learn.

A certificate can show that you completed a course. A portfolio can show what you can actually do.

If you're also starting digital marketing from scratch, which area would you learn first — SEO, Google Ads, social media marketing, or content marketing?
