In this article, we will discuss how you can enable screen recording on a Chromebook. It has been over years since users wished for a native screen recording tool on Chromebooks. Even though there are several Chrome extensions that do this job efficiently, they ask for making payments even for accessing the most basic features. This might be one of the most significant reasons Google has introduced a native screen recorder for the Chromebook. This feature has been currently introduced to only the beta channel; however, it will soon be rolled out as a stable version. Follow the steps mentioned below to enable screen recording and to check the working of the new tool on Chromebook.

The native screen recording is right now available only for Chrome OS’s beta channel (88.0.4324.22). In case you are using a stable version of Chrome OS, you need to switch over to the beta channel. This can be done by going to the “Settings,” head on to “About Chrome OS,” then click on “Additional Details” and “Change Channel” and press “Beta.”

Again, open the “About Chrome OS” page and check for the updates. The process won’t affect any of your program files. Below we have mentioned the steps further.

  1. First, open the chrome://flags on your Chrome browser.
  2. Then find out the option “screen capture test.”
  3. If required, you may also directly open chrome://flags/#screen-capture to get access to the screen recorder flag.
  4. Further, move on to the drop-down menu to select “Enabled.”
  5. Then press “Restart,” appearing at the lower-right corner.
  6. Head on to the “Quick Settings” menu.
  7. A new “Screen capture” tile will appear on your screen. This denotes that screen recording has been successfully added to the Chromebook.
  8. To use it, you need to click on the “Screen capture” tile, and a bottom-bar menu will open on your screen.
  9. You need to press the video icon, and you will be switched over to screen recording.
  10. You can further choose the type of recording you want, like the full-screen view, active window, or the partial screen.
  11. Your Chromebook will further start recording on pressing the “Record” button.
  12. If you want to stop the recording, you will have to click on the stop icon appearing on the taskbar.
  13. Your recording will be saved in a well-optimized WEBM format.
  14. There’s a lack of one feature, though. There’s a lack of support for the microphone. It would have been a great option for the people needing to create a video with a background voiceover.
  15. This newly introduced tool alongside screen recording also brings an intuitive way to capture screenshots on your Chromebook. To capture the screen, you need to simply press the “Ctrl + Shift + Overview button.” Your device will move on to a new screen capture mode.

So, this is how you can enable screen recording on a Chromebook with the help of the new Capture Mode, which lets you accomplish the task very efficiently. The new Capture Mode has a lack of microphone and doesn’t even support screenshot annotation, but it is still better to have something than empty-handed.
