It should go without saying that a shattered window, especially in inclement weather, can cause significant harm to your home. You simply can't disregard the possibility that a flying baseball or a powerful storm could cause catastrophic damage to your glass window. Work on replacing the window should start as soon as the broken glass has been cleaned up. That's what every professional would suggest. Because, you know, a broken window can unavoidably increase your electricity expenses, particularly in a cold or hot climate. Yet how? So, one is to attempt to fix it by yourself, and the other is to contact glass repair services right away.

Fixing a Broken Glass Window at Home:

  • First and foremost, clean out broken window glass. Since you will be handling broken bits of glass and fragments, you need to protect yourself with eyewear and thick or leather gloves. Next step, you should remove the glass from the window, specifically if the glass pieces are caught in the framing. If the pieces are very obstinate, you can use a heat gun to loosen the glazing compound surrounding the glass before gently tapping a hammer around the sides of the frame. Once you’re done prime the frame and prepare it for the new glass and putty.

After lightly polishing the interiors of the frames to remove any remaining putty, and clean them with a cloth and apply a heavy layer of turpentine on the frames and allow it to seep into the wood. Oiling the frames keeps the putty supple and flexible, which stops it from drying out too quickly. As a result, you won't need to replace your windows as frequently.

  • It's time to apply fresh putty to hold the glass in place after giving the turpentine time to thoroughly soak into the wood of the frames. Apply a small layer of the putty into the interior of the framing after kneading it with your hands until it is warm and malleable.
  • Insert the glass pane gradually into the putty space between the two frames. It shouldn't be more than an ¼ inch smaller than the space it is intended to fit, so check that it is the proper size. Let some of the putty to spill over the glass's edges as you push the pane into position.
  • You can clean off the extra putty off the glass after being smoothed into the crease with a putty knife and let the putty dry for a few days, then paint it with a primer and few coats of paint.

Though this method is a little dangerous, with some time and effort, you can certainly install the new window glass on your own.
