
Every fall I get some version of the same call. A golfer finishes the season shorter off the tee than they started. They have taken two or three lessons trying to fix it, and none of them held.
I ask them what they did in the gym that year. There is usually a pause.

Golf swing strength comes from training your legs, hips, and core to produce force and move it up through the swing, not from building muscle in pieces. Rotational power, ground force, and posterior chain strength, trained two or three days a week, will do more for your distance than any amount of isolated lifting.
Most golfers chase distance by changing the swing. A new grip, a speed stick, one more video at eleven at night. Some of that helps. But if the body underneath cannot make force and pass it along, the lesson has nowhere to land.

Where Does Power in the Golf Swing Actually Come From?
Power in the swing follows a sequence. The legs move first, then the hips, then the torso, then the arms, then the club. That order is called the kinematic sequence, and it is the difference between a swing that looks fast and one that actually is fast.
If any link in that chain is weak or out of order, speed leaks out before it reaches the clubhead. That is why golf training in Minnesota focuses less on isolated muscles and more on how the body produces and transfers force as a system, from the ground up.
What actually drives distance:
- Ground force production through the legs
- Hip rotation speed and stability
- Core strength to transfer force without losing it
- Posterior chain power for a stable impact position
- Upper body strength to control the club at high speed
A Simple Progression to Build Swing Strength and Power
Step One: Build a Strength Base
Start with fundamental lower body and core lifts: goblet squats, deadlifts, and single-leg RDLs. This builds the raw force production the swing will eventually use.
Step Two: Add Rotational Strength
Bring in cable rotations, Pallof presses, and anti-rotation holds. These train the core to transfer force through the swing plane instead of leaking it.
Step Three: Train for Speed
Once the strength is in place, add med ball rotational throws, jump squats, and loaded carries. This phase teaches the body to move that force explosively.
Two to three sessions a week is enough to move through this progression without cutting into practice or play.

Chasing speed training before there is a strength base to speed up
- Training the upper body heavily while neglecting the legs and hips, where power starts
- Skipping mobility work, which limits how far you can rotate regardless of strength

Not required, but a coach sequences strength and speed work correctly, which usually means faster and more consistent results than figuring out the right order alone. A coach can also adjust exercises based on your movement limitations, training experience, and golf goals, helping make sure your training supports your swing rather than working against it.
