Before you begin, gather all of your tools and have them ready; it's impossible to overstate the importance of having the correct tools on hand and easily accessible:

Preparation:

First, remove the entire carpet and sound deadening from the package tray area, as well as the bottom front of the package tray area. Remove the side panels and the cockpit brace (if applicable). The rear boot snaps (two of them) are removed with a 10mm socket, while the front clip is removed by unscrewing the Philips screw and removing the little rectangular piece off. This must be done on both sides. Then, on the rocker panel closest to the door jam, remove the Phillips screw. After that, you can take off the weather/protectant strip that runs down the edge of the side panel. Carefully peel the side panels apart from the body.

Remove the Package tray cover (about ten 10mm bolts) and the seat belts from their receptacles by prying off the plastic cap from the seat belt harness restraint and removing the 19mm (IIRC) bolt, and laying the seat belt mechanism to the side. Remove the ECU from the mounting studs and set it aside. The bracket is held on by three studs; the bottommost stud must be removed, so use the Dremel tool with the cutting disc to cut it flush (you will not need it).

Cutting the Area of the Package Tray:

This is the most difficult aspect of the installation…and the easiest if you don't use the provided templates and instruction page. On either extreme edge (right and left) of the package shelf space, cut a 3″ wide by 6″ long strip of sheet metal. By putting the bar in a relative installation position, you'll be able to see where it has to be cut. Replace the bar and repeat the operation on the other side, then test fit it. The rear supports should fit through the slots you just cut, and it should butt up to the seat belt tower flush.

Place the roll bar in place now. Secure the bar to the seat belt tower with the 17mm bolts that kept the bottom of the seat belt mechanism in place. Because you can't get a socket in there, you'll have to use a combination open end and box end to tighten it down; however, don't tighten it all the way. You'll need to move the bar back and forth to line the top of the bar with the securing holes on the top of the seat belt tower, so leave the bolt unfastened. After securing the bottom, tighten the top 10mm screw on the seat belt mechanism. Looking down from above, you can see the mounting tab with a hole on the bar that fits with the hole underneath it in the seat belt tower.

Drilling:

You're ready to drill the backing plate holes now that the bar is securely fastened to the seat belt tower. To begin, jack up the car's rear end and set jack stands in the lift positions. Remove the wheels. Then, by loosening the 10mm bolts that secure the liner to the wheel well, you can remove it.

These are some of the ways you can install a harddog roll bar, Miata roll bar.
